Ultrasound third trimester-a strange observation

Hi Ladies,

I am 32w/6d pregnant and we has an ultrasound two days ago to check the baby growth. Everything sounds normal but we saw that a baby just sticks out her tongue sometimes in ultrasound. This seemed very odd to Dr. and technician. Have you ever heard anything about this case? or have you had this for your own ultrasound? what could it mean? I am very worried, please share your idea with me.

You concerned because shes sticking her tongue out? Well I would've asked the doctors why there was concern. I wouldn't worry about it, at this stage LOs are practicing swallowing and their natural reflexes. They stick out their tongues and sometime even mouth on their umbilical cords.

  • I think that is freaking adorable- maybe taking a drink? Who knows, don't stress about it, keep that picture and show her when she is older- what a cute memory to have :)

  • Fwiw, this LO was sucking her toes (or at least attempting to) at my ultrasound yesterday... I was in love :)

  • yes, because in the report the radiologist reported this action of the baby and yesterday dr said that maybe there is something like cleft lip but they could not confirm it because the quality if the photos were not good. Anyway she was not sure about it. If a bay has a cleft lip, she will have her tongue stick out or what? However, in the second ultrasound their confirmed that all the anatomy of the baby was fine. I am not sure if I should consider as a normal reflex of the baby or not.

  • My nephew (who is 2 weeks old) was sticking his tongue out during the ultrasound. He's fine.

  • I have an awesome pic of my DD sticking her tongue out during an ultrasound. The tech said it was the first time she'd ever seen a baby do that in utero. My daughter is perfectly fine. I wouldn't worry about it.
  • My daughter kept sticking her tongue out during my 20 week ultrasound. The tech just kept saying how cute she was. She also said they do that when they first start to practice swallowing fluid. I wouldn't worry. It's too adorable. Just live in the moment and be a proud mommy. :)
  • None of my DD's did but DS did at each of his. I find it odd that they weren't familiar with it at all. Additionally, in my limited not a doctor understanding cleft lip is a facial structure problem not at all related to sticking the tongue out. I find it odd that they jump to that conclusion without noting any facial bone structure problems.
  • I'd honestly say it's nothing to worry about. It could mean that the baby's sensory skills are just a head. My son didn't really do much during the ultra-sounds i had with him and he's had sensory problems. Not that he's blind or anything, but his development (hand eye coordination, core strength, and speech) is a little off track. So this could be a very good sign of high development.
  • We had a 3D on the 26th and Lo stuck her tongue out and was making sucking faces if that makes since.
    The tech just giggled

  • My daughter was sticking her tongue out in her 3d/4d ultrasound also. Completely normal!
  • I just had an ultrasound this morning (34+6), and baby was asleep at first. Measurements went quick, since she wasn't moving much. At the end, we were taking a couple pictures of her profile, and she woke up... Stretched real big, opened and closed her mouth a few times, and stuck out her tongue (sort of like in imitation of sucking?) it was adorable, and perfectly normal!
