Those who have dealt with depression

I think I may be depressed. I made an appt with my doctor, but I am really nervous. I'm not sure what to expect.

Our insurance doesn't cover a counselor, so I'm not sure how much my general practice doctor can do.

Does anyone have any insight?

  • How sure are you about the counselor?  It's called Cognitive Behavior Therapy (at least that's how my insurance billed it).

  • Do you have prescription coverage? Your GP can prescribe prosac, or something similar. or you may be able to find a counselor who will let you pay on a sliding scale if insurance won't cover it.

  • Are you sure counseling isn't covered?  They may require a certain type of provider (psychologist vs. licensed clinical social worker), but most insurance companies do cover this.

  • I didn't think my insurance covered it either but I called and asked.  They emailed me a list of approved counselors.  I see her every 2 weeks.  I went to my GP and she gave me a daily pill (Lexapro) and a "situation" pill (Xanax).  Sh
