Lipase and Scalding Help

Hi all,

I've been EBF LO, who is now almost 3 months old, sticking in the occasional pumping session every so often when he naps for longer than expected or slept through a usual feeding time at night. I've fed him some of the refrigerated milk on long drives, and I have about 75 ounces in my deep freeze in 3-5 oz bags.

Well, I had to go into work for a meeting the other day and decided to tap into my stash for the first time since I didn't have time to pump that AM. I defrosted the bag, sniffed it, and wouldn't you know-- smelled awful. Tasted a drop and it was soapy. I then defrosted a few more bags from different dates and yep, looks like we have a lipase issue. Goody. I've been able to keep bottles in my fridge for 6 days with no problem, so assumed I was in the clear.

Has anyone had success feeding LO a lipasey bottle? Hubs, a doctor, keeps telling me that hope may not be lost and he may take the bottle, but I feel terrible trying to feed him something that smells so foul. And I've read about scalding pumped milk before freezing to ward off the lipase-- can this be done in a bottle warmer? Or do I need to use a pot on the stove? Would much rather the bottle warmer, as I am super clumsy and have spilled milk every.single.time I've transferred (I even pump directly into the bags for that reason!)

I must admit, I'm feeling a little depressed about the potential loss of all those pumping sessions/milk, so any advice would be great! TIA.

  • While I was hospitalized DH had to use frozen milk to feed DS and he said that the milk smelled metallic. Like pennies and he tasted it but had no point of reference for breast milk.

He said DS drank it no problem and suffered no ill effec

  • If you're LO takes it, then don't worry about it.  I also realized after I had stored 50 oz that my milk also smelled "off".  DS wouldn't take it.  We started scalding at that point but the previously pumped stuff that wasn't scalded was

  • Sorry to hear that you have a lipase issue :(  I just discovered I have this problem too, so I will offer my experience/opinion.

Unfortunately, our LO will not take the 'lipasey' bottle.  In fact, it took us awhile to figure out that I
