Baby Names

Kate

Up tonight with an upset tummy, and just realized I'm in love with this name for a girl, but I know it's a nickname. I don't really like C/Katherine or C/Kaitlyn though (partially because there's a million and a half different ways people spell them, but mostly because I just don't like them). Thoughts?

Re: Kate

  • My friend has a DD named Kate....not a NN for her. I think if you like Kate but don't like longer more formal names for Kate, then just use Kate. It is a legit name and spelled correctly.

Just don't be you-neek and spell it Kayte, Kcate, K-

  • I have a high school friend and a neighbor named Kate, and a cousin named Katie.  All are their full names, so it is normal to me.
  • I go by Kate, but my full name is Kathryn.  I've always loved the versatility of my name; that there are so many nickname options, and I can choose one that seems to fit me.  I think with Kate alone I'd feel sort of stuck.  But I can only s

  • If this LO had been a girl, she would have been "just" Kate. To us, it didn't make sense to give her a longer name we didn't really like anyway when we knew we wanted to call her Kate. I love it : ) Now if only a boy name would come so easily...

  • I don't love Catherine either, but I do love Kate.  I wanted to use just Kate for our LO's MN, but DH vetoed it.

I do like Caitlin, NN Cait, but only that spelling of it.

I think Kate is fine to use as a FN, just know tha

  • I feel the same as you - I love Kate, but I'm not crazy about Katherine or Caitlin. I ended up just taking it off our list entirely because I knew it'd bother me to use Kate without a more formal name. It is too nicknamey for me, and I'd want her to ha

  • My DD is Kate (her full name is Katherine).

Personally, I prefer it as a nickname.  I LOVE Kate.  Always have.  I like Katherine very much, but if Kate wasn't a nickname for Katherine I wouldn't have used the name.

  • I'm fine with Kate as a full name, I feel like it stands alone. When I was a teenager, I was obsessed with having a FN/NN for all my favorite baby names. Now, as a person that hardly ever goes by my full name, sometimes I just wish I didn't have the FN. E

  • I'm actually fine with Kate as a full first name, and not just a nickname for something else.  But, I think a longer middle names needs to be paired with it.

  • Not a fan of Kathleen or Katrina, either, especially not Katrina. I see both sides of the full name issue. My full name is Eleanor, which I hate, so I go by Ellie. Hardly anyone knows my full name, so it's kind of a pain for things at college since my sch
  • I had a childhood neighbor whose name is Kate. When she was young she went by Katie, but in adulthood she uses Kate.

I think Kate works as a stand alone name.
  • I like Kate on its own.

  • I feel Kate stands alone very well and doesn't require a formal name. Just as I see Nora as a stand alone not just as a nn for Eleanor. Some names are too nicknamey as formal names like Will, Jake, or Ellie, but Kate stands alone very beautifully.

  • I like it as a first name a lot.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

  • Because Kate isn't "cutesy" like many nicknames a child can grow out of, I think it's fine as a stand alone name.  It works for both a child and an adult.

  • I am "just Kate.". Never had any problem with it, though people assume my full name is Katherine.

  • We're very strongly considering Kate Elizabeth for DD.  I normally prefer more formal names, but I don't like Katherine, Katerina, Katelyn, etc., and I know I'd only want to call her Kate.  I'm thinking if she hated Kate, she could always go by
