Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Flying with baby.

Has anyone ever flown with an infant? We are taking my daughter on a plane in June and she will be about 4 months then. I am still not sure whether I am going to purchase a seat for her or just keep her on my lap which is free. Obviously not having to pay is ideal but I have some safety concerns about that. If I purchase a seat for her then she could sit in her car seat. Does anyone have any experience or advice?

  • What are your safety concerns of having LO in your lap? Car seat wont help anything if theres a crash

  • That's exactly what I was thinking but I'm reading a lot of info online saying that it is STRONGLY recommended to have them strapped in a car seat. I also read one article saying that if there was an impact the child would be crushed against my body. I kn

  • We will be flying with our twins at 4m, 9m, and 10m. We are not getting them their own seats. If there is a crash, then we are all going together. They will prob want to be held and be calmer that way anyways.

  • Definitely get her a seat and use her carseat. While PP is right that it won't help in a major, fall from the air crash, children, especially lap babies, are frequently injured due to turbulence. Also, checking a carseat is considered dangerous (carsea

  • Also, both the FAA and AAP recommend using carseats on board. I'm honestly not sure why lap babies are even allowed.

  • Lap. Definitely. We flew with DS when he was 3 weeks old. I put him in a soft carrier against my chest. Feed on take off and landing to prevent pressure on the ears.

  •  We will be flying in June as well and I'm undecided also after reading the posts here. LO will also be 4 months then. I'm leaning toward getting him a seat.

It is dangerous for the child, yourself and the other passengers to fly as a lap child.  If you check your car seat there is tons of damage done to the seat due to baggage handlers.  My seven month old has been on 8 international flights startin
  • I think we are going to buy her a seat after all. It is expensive but well worth it. Thanks for all of the feedback:)

  • Tickets are already so insanely expensive. I'm taking mine across country when she is 4 months and plan to keep her on my lap. I'm hoping she will sleep or BF the whole flight.
