my son the princess

I know Halloween is a looooong way off, but... my 3 year old son 4 at Halloween is adamant that he wants to be a "Pink Princess" for Halloween. First off I want to be clear I am in NO WAY upset or against this, if he wants to be a princess, he will be the best dressed princess ever. I just want some advice on the best way to help him understand that many little boys don't wear a dress and that some kids at school may not understand. I'm early I know, but he brings it up every day and I want to have a good response going so when halloween happens I maintain what I've "always" said about his being a princess, rather than suddenly change my tune.
Thanks so much in advance!

Re: my son the princess

  • I have a feeling your son might grow out of this stage and onto the "I want to be Batman, like every other little boy in my class" stage.  And if he still wants to be a princess then let him.

  • Hehe.  That would be my son too!

As it is, I got in the mail the bridesmaid dress for my sisters wedding (a purple dress) and tried it on.  My 3 year old son says...I want to have a pink dress for the wedding!  He is in the wedding

  • Meh, he's young. DS wants to be DJ Lance for Halloween but he brings home sparkly pink heels from school at least once a month. Doesn't bother me and the kids at school don't seem to notice or care.

  • Around that age DS wanted his nails painted like mine and DD's.  I told him that's fine, and  that boys don't *usually* have their nails painted.  I did paint his nails and he went to DC and was called a "girl".  He said his teacher

  • I would smile, nod, and say "sure thing, sweetie!" for now and nothing more.

If it's still on the table by October, deal with it then.

When October gets here and you go to buy the costume you can explain that the other boys in class might t

  • In DS's classroom there's a dress-up corner and everyday he ends up in a princess dress. I think it's a phase that a lot of boys go through. I asked his teachers if any of the other kids give him a hard time about it and they said at this age (his class h

  • I bet he will grow out of this by Halloween but if he doesn't you could take him shopping for batman and other little boy type costumes and see if he finds something he likes better.
  • I have a feeling by Halloween he will change his mind, you could take him shopping for batman, spiderman, etc  type costumes and maybe they will peak his interest more.
  • My son who is more into girl things than boy stuff even at 6 relented when he wanted to be batgirl and started saying Batman the day of Halloween at that age even though it was the black Batgirl costume. But I let my son do more than most are comfortable

  • Posting again :)

I have a lot of dress up clothes (even lots of girlie stuff even though Cordelia is only 14 months old). And Cedric and the little boy that I babysit (who is 4) always come in wearing the pretty Princess outfits.  They love

  • My boys never went through a princess stage but they don't have a sister so that might make a difference. I think it's fine but I have never encountered a boy dressed as a princess for Halloween. I would probably brace yourself for comments from others.
