We are still bedsharing with DS, but I have noticed lately that he doesn't wake up anymore on his own to nurse. I shift him to switch sides with him throughout the night, and if I jostle him enough, he'll want to nurse. I can't help but wonder if I didn't touch him, if he'd sleep all night long.
Thus, I've been thinking about buying a twin mattress to put next to our bed and transition him to sleeping there. I'm sure that since he's used to nursing, he'd wake some to nurse on his own, but I would expect that it will be less than while I disturb his sleep during the night. So, mamas who transitioned this way, here are my questions:
1. How did you start the transition? Just naps at first, just bedtime at first, or all at once?
2. When LO woke in the night, did you move to LO's mattress to nurse or bring them to your bed? When they wanted snuggles, did you move down to their bed or bring them in with you?
...I ask because I wonder about the merits of having DS just be in his bed only, with or without mommy, as a rule once we have his bed. I want it to be less confusing but easiest transition for him.
Please share your success stories and tips and tricks for making this the easiest and gentlest transition we could have! TIA!
PS: For tl;dr folks, I apologize. I've always been too wordy.
