Baby Names

What are your REAL thoughts on this name...

Declan?  I am scheduled for a c-section on April 8 (hopeful he may come sooner) and my husband and I are having a really hard time naming our baby boy.  The one name we keep coming back to is Declan.  Our daughter's name is Scarlet.  I love the 2 names together but am concerned Declan may be too unusual.  What do you think?

Re: What are your REAL thoughts on this name...

  • I wouldn't use it, but I like it alright enough. I wouldn't side-eye it at all on someone else kid.

  • I'm going to be honest since you asked for real thoughts and say that it's one of those names that is popular here on the Bump that I just don't get. It hasn't grown on me. I find it a little harsh sounding, I think.

However, I do not think it is

  • I actually think it's pretty popular right now, so I wouldn't consider it too unusual, but I'm personally not a fan of the name.

  • Reminds me of Revenge, the tv show.

    NMS and I don't think it's a good sibset with Scarlet, but it's not something I'd side-eye.

  • The first few times I heard this name I really disliked it by it has grown on me and now I really like it. I don't think it is something I would use because I like it but don't love it. I think Declan and Scarlett go great together.
  • I'm an Elementary School teacher and I have never heard of the name. So to me its unusual but doesn't sounds weird.  The two names go together.

  • It's popular on this site but I don't like it.  I think it's because I just don't know much about its origin so it's just out there for me.  I have to say that I actually really like it with the name Scarlett.  You could also try Deacon too

  • My birthday is April 8th, so I hope you have him then. I'm not really a fan of Declan. It's not bad, though. I don't think that it is too unusual, though. If you both keep coming back to it, then go for it!

  • Declan and Scarlet sound good together but I have to admit Deacon is not a name that I really like.
  • I don't love it. It's pretty popular where I come from. Its ok though, and sounds good with Scarlet. Deacon I hate - its too much of a 'word' name to me and reminds me too closely of church deacons.
  • I like it! I had a student named Declan, and it suited him well.

  • Well, as my son is Declan.... you know what I think.

As I say that, though - here's the reality.  DH found the name.  5 years ago I had never, EVER heard of it.  I had no idea how to pronounce it!

    DH really liked

I don't think it's that unusual as I have been hearing it more and more often.  That said, I don't understand it's appeal.  It's just 'meh' to me.

Declan and Scarlett are a decent sibset.

  • I really like it, we named our son an Irish name and kept coming back to Declan, but I just felt like it was a little too out there...

  • Its funny that its not common in the US yet. In the UK, it was 69th most popular for boys in 1996, and I think it was similar in Aus/NZ, so it feels a little 90s to me. It actually is more popular in the US than PP said above, though - its actually 177 on

  • Overall I like it. I love how it sounds, but don't particularly care for how it looks if that makes any sense. I pronounced it wrong for a long time.

I think it sounds great with Scarlet!

  • I really like it. I wouldn't call it unusual but it's not common either. It goes nicely with Scarlet.

  • It's NMS but I wouldn't side-eye it.  It's like a lot of Irish names, perfectly fine but not something I'd ever use because DH and I aren't Irish and there are enough people into Irish names that we don't need to hop on that bus.

  • I'm a huge fan of name meanings, and DH and I have this name picked out if we ever having a boy.  We were all set to name our little one Declan if it was a boy, but had no definite girl name and it turned out to be a girl.

  • We considered Declan for DS2.  Even though I like it, there's just something about it that I couldn't commit to.  Someone once said it looks to close to "declaw" so that may have messed me up a bit.  Also I do feel like it's pretty trendy r
