Natural Birth

Ultrasounds???

Did anyone opt for only one or none? How did you decide this?

Re: Ultrasounds???

  • I did only the anatomy scan with DD and with DS I planned to only do the a/s, but had spotting and did one more to check for viability.

I see the value of the a/s as it can identify problems that might otherwise go unnoticed until bir

  • Unless there's a specific need for one, the 20 week anatomy scan will have been my last one (I had an early one because of a previous miscarraige, a nuchal translucency, and an ultrasound with my CVS test).  I won't have any more unless the doc or

  • Thanks Ladies. I see value in the 20 week one, for myself it just doesn't feel natural to be zooming sound waves over LO, although not fatal it does alter cells. However I am also open to them if there is something that can be done with what is found.
  • Sadly, I will have had a few during this pregnancy - two of which are later on.  I'm one that doesn't do anything that's not necessary.  My amnio fluid level is borderline polyhydramnios - this diagnosis *can* cause complications in delivery

  • We had one to check for viability, since I had spotting early on and then we had the A/S today--which was bittersweet because it might very well be the last time we see baby until birth (though my mil thinks we should get one of the 3d scans when the baby

  • I opt for 2 (NT and anatomy).

DH's cousin opted for none. Surprise twins! That was an ambulance ride and a very stressful attempted home birth. She opted for one u/s for her next pregnancy. <img src="https://community.thebump.com/cs/emoticons/emot

  • Well I feel like the odd one out now. I have had a few ultra sounds. Given where my placenta is it is very difficult for my MW to fully hear the heart beat, so we end up having to do a quick ultra sound to check. I feel abnormal now....

  • I wanted none.  I will have three.  :(. The first one, we didn't know when we conceived and due to my loss history and other factors the doctor wanted to check.  He did a 3 minute dating u/s at 7 weeks.  Then at 14 weeks my midwife

It's nice to hear from someone else how they feel the bit of a slippery slope they can be. We learned early on about the whole placenta previa "diagnosis" and how it most often resolves itself. So many placentas start out low

  • I only had one at 20 weeks just to see heart, kidneys, brain etc. If my midwife is able to confidently determine the position of the baby at 35 weeks then I won't have any more.

  • I only feel the need for one. Unless other medical reasons exist, there is no need to get any more, if even that one. The exception to that would be if I was unsure of my dates, I'd get a dating u/s early on.
