jobalchak - PTO question

Is it typical for a parent to be asked to do a background check to volunteer?

Re: jobalchak - PTO question

  • It is where I'm from. You can't volunteer until you pass.

  • Thanks! WE are totally fine with doing it, just thought it would be expensive for the schools.

Also, kind of curious what things would show up on that kind of BG check that prevent someone from passing (besides the obvious). BM has a few questionable items in her past...like a protection order that was issued against her (by someone else not DH) and a MAJOR driving offense.

  • DH has something on his record but he was upfront about it and they passed him. I'm not sure what it is classed at but it was violent.....it happened almost 15 years ago though.

  • Yeah for BM's sake I would hope they would at least discuss it prior to just flunking her.

Both of her offenses are about 4 years old.

I wonder how many people are scared off from volunteering based on the BG check.

  • Our PTA doesn't require background checks to participate or volunteer at PTA sponsored events. However, the school does background checks if parents want to volunteer in the classroom.  My understanding is the only offenses the school raises an eyebrow to are drug related and sex related. Someone with a prior DUI would be able to volunteer on campus but probably would not be authorized to drive for field trips.

This was my thought, she may be able to do OTHER volunteer activites but not transport the kids, etc.

    Thank you for the responses.
