Afraid to eat...Acid Reflux

I'm starving, it's 2:30 and I haven't had lunch yet. Most everything I've eaten in the past 3 days has given me really bad acid reflux so I'm literally afraid to eat food. I've had: Egg sandwich, PB&J, cereal (Honey Bunches of Oats), hot dogs, Nutri grain bar, mixed nuts, and spaghetti.

Anyone have any suggestions on food items that wont give me acid reflux?!  I'm not sure what causes it, so I'm not sure what to stay away from...though, I'm guessing its different for everyone?

  • simple stuff that is easy on your stomach such as rice, apple sauce, plain noodles, toast without jam, scrambled eggs with no seasoning. something similar to the BRAT diet. Avoid dairy, nuts, popcorn, spices, and fatty meats.

  • Maybe try taking a tums or two before you eat. I have started doing that just to help with my heartburn. Luckily my acid reflux has been hit or miss.

I agree with PP about everything plain. Prob your best bet unfortunately.

  • Yogurt, almonds and peach juice are all supposed to be good for heart burn when pregnant. Last time I tried all three. I don't know if they actually worked, but they filled me up and I felt better, even if it was just in my head.

  • Me too. Except sometimes when I don't even eat for several hours I'm still getting reflux. Going to ask my doctor tomorrow if prilosec daily can help prevent. I've heard it does wonders!

This. Also washing down what you're eating with milk can help as well.

Ice cream! For reals. I'm eating a bowl of mint chocolate chip because its one of the few foods that doesn't make me feel like I've just swallowed flames.

I did eat some chocolate chip last night, but it didn't help it. It just masked it and as soon as my bowl was empty it was right there waiting for me. Maybe I just need to eat more ice cream ;)

FWIW, nothing has helped my acid reflux/heartburn except lifesavers -- pep o mint only. I got the big, individually wrapped kind and I have one right after eating, another one a couple hours later, and whenever I feel a little acid-y. It's been, well, a lifesaver!

  • My acid reflux got horrid about a week ago. I have bottles of Tums at home, at work, in vehicles, in purses...EVERYWHERE! They are hit and miss as far as easing the symptoms. Today I actually burped acid into my mouth while I was in a work meeting. GREAAATTTTT! I'm sticking to bland food - rice, bread and other things that will hopefully soak up the acid. I think it's due to the baby pushing your digestive organs around and your muscles naturally loosening (acid doesn't stay put anymore). I'd stick with bland and boring and see how that goes. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

  • Chocolate is awful for acid reflux so stay away from the chocolate chip ice cream.

I actually suffer from acid reflux daily (and for several years before pregnancy) and take Zantac twice daily to control it. If it's so bad you can't eat anything, you may want to ask your OB about other OTC treatments.

  • Ugh!  I have it so bad that I'm waking up at night with mouthfuls of vomit/acid.  (Sorry, TMI!)  Everything makes it happen, but tomato-based products make it much worse.  Dairy seems to help, but I've heard it creates more acid.  Try Zantac--that really does seem to help.

  • For a week straight I had acid reflux no matter what I ate. It didn't seem anything helped, except chugging mylanta.
I hope you find your triggers!

i have started having it sooooo bad as well. I heard that almonds were good because they have oils in them that coat your esophagus so it's not so painful. I haven't been able to find my triggers either, but tonight I started taking chewable papaya enzyme ( bought at GNC for 5 bucks) because I hate taking meds and wanted to find something more natural and so far no acid reflux!! Hopefully it continues to work :)

  • The only thing that helps me is Zantac twice daily with tums during flair ups.  I've struggled with reflux for years so I knew it was going to be a problem for me.  You should talk to your OB about it.

  • so sick of it. going through bottle after bottle of tums and finally had to break down as ask the doctor to call in a prescription for something today.

oddly enough, it reinforced the old wive's tale of baby hair causing heartburn because at my ultrasound today they said the baby already had tons of it. this kid is trying to kill me. one body part at. a. time.

  • Unless I'm eating yogurt or drinking milk, I get acid reflux. It's so bad that I went through a gallon of milk in less than a week. I usually make a gallon last a week or so. Good luck!

I'm taking Prilosec every morning and it is amazing. I used to wake up 5 or 6 times a night feeling like I was dying from the heartburn, but it's gone away completely in the past few days. Good luck!
