What would you do?

I am coming up on a frozen donor egg cycle and just need some advice. The last two cycles were a distaster. The last IVF with my own eggs ended in a blighted ovum and ectopic at the same time. We then decided to move on to donor eggs. We were successful in some respects in that we have 10 frozen embryos. We transferred one embryo because my RE assured they were great quality and we were being excessively aggressive by transferring more than one. Well -- that ended in a chemical pregnancy (we transferred a day 5 4AA blast).

So..here we are now getting ready to do a transfer next month. My dilemma is -- should we transfer one or two this next go around. The remaining embryos are a couple of 4AA and then the rest being of AB quality.

I should preface this with that I have had a successful pregnancy. My first IVF with my own eggs resulted in my son.

We really do not want multiples for various reasons -- risky pregnancy, potential for bedrest, financial aspects of multiples.

But at the same time -- I really do not want another failure. So what would you do -- would you put one or two back?

Re: What would you do?

  • If you don't want multiples, only put back 1.

A friend used donor egg.  Put back 2 fresh AA grade blasts on Day 5 and got 1 child.  Had several frozens.  Went back for sibling. Second time... Put back 2 frozen AB or BB grade embryos (not exactly sure, but not highest grade) on Day 6 and, guess what... she got twins the second time!  Surprise!

My twins are frozen donor embryo.  One embryo looked "Great!" and the other only looked "OK".  I don't know the real grades, sorry.  We transferred both and both stuck!

I also know 2 people who transferred 1 embryo, but ended up with 2 & 3 babies!  Very rare, but it does happen.  You hear those stories on the multiples board too.

This. I agree, if you can't do multiples, I wouldn't risk it and I'd only put in one. Good luck with whatever you decide

  • Hi. I can only tell you my own decision making thought process, I did a DE cycle in November.

We put in one fresh A five
day blast. I didn't get pregnant.

This time, I have two frosties in. Last Friday, two thawed and were put in. I still have two frozen.
I based my decision on my age, 44, my huzz is 45, neither one of us have children.

I also cannot stand the lupron injections, pills, patches, blood draws. The whole process makes me feel like an impersonal chemistry set.

I just want a baby. That is why two blasts was the right choice for me and my huzz was agreeable. He honestly resisted at first, but we both want a family desperately, so we did it.
We figured whatever happens we will deal with it. Two or one. We will take the chance. :

Going to ditto this. It is a personal decision, and if you have no doubt that you don't want multipules, then only transfer one. GL!

    April 2013 DE IVF= BFN

September 2013 DE IVF (Fingers Crossed) = BFFFN! again...

October 2013 FET of our last 2 = Beta Hellzz for 6-7 Weeks. M/C

Bottom line, if you really don't want multiples, I would only put back one.

But, may I ask how old you are now?  If you're under 40, I would put back only one...but if you're 40 or older, I would seriously consider two.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Me: AMA, DOR, undetectable AMH, carrier of SMA, MTHFR homozygous C677T, high cytokines, low IGg B cells, Factor XIII V34l mutation, High Anti-Phosphatidylethanolmine, borderline hypothyroid and mildly insulin resistant.

MH: No known issues, aside from MTHFR.

Recommendations from RI: LIT, Humira, IVIG, Lovenox, Baby Aspirin, Folic Acid, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.

Currently taking:  Pre-Natal vitamins, Foltanx, Low-dose synthroid and Metformin.

When cycling also taking: Baby Aspirin, Lovenox, Humira and IVIG.

TTC since 7/11/09..with medical intervention starting in 2010, including 4 failed IVF's and 6 failed IUI's...only "success" was a chemical pregnancy in 11/2012 (credited to use of DE).

    FET #1 (11th cycle) on 8/23/13 = BFN.

FET #2 (12th cycle) Transfer of last two (day 6) donor egg blasts on 1/22/14 = BFP, EDD = 10/10/14 (please stick little BOY!)

  • Thank you ladies for the advice. It is so greatly appreciated! I think I am just having so much doubt because of the last two failures.

I am 36 years old, MrsT4. You are totally right -- I should probably just put one back. I just get scared that I am lessening my odds.

    Thanks again!
