Toddlers: 24 Months+

2 yrs old refusing naps

A few weeks before lo birthday she started refusing her nap. Its been a cry it out battle. We got up at 9 today, I put her down at 3... Its 445 and she is still screaming at me. I refuse to go in and give in bc she is mean without rest. Im just at a loss. I cant lose nap time. We are expecting our second kiddo in a few weeks and I need nap time for my sanity!!!!

Any suggestions?

Yep and as I write this she just gave in... ugh... its almost 5pm so she cant sleep long or we will nvr get her to bed.

Re: 2 yrs old refusing naps

  • That seems a little late for a nap IMO. If I did this with my LO, she would never go to sleep at night. We wake up a 7, go down for a nap right after lunch at noon, and I limit it to an hour and a half max. We have had our rough patches with anti-napping, almost like we had to redo CIO. We also keep a pretty even routine of lunch, then potty, a book and then lay down for nap. If she gets out of bed, we don't say a word to her, just march her back in there. That's really the only advice I have though.

  • My 26 month old wakes around 7:15-7:30, then naps at around 1-3, anything later and bedtime is a disaster, She's probably overtired by that point.

  • Six hours from waking to nap doesn't seem too long, but I recall DD going through a protest phase, and then later shifting it back so she was up for 7.5hrs before her nap (then 4.5hrs before bed).

  • my 2 year old is refusing naps too, but only at home, not at daycare.  she will play in bed for 2 hours without falling asleep.  As soon as we get into the car, she's out cold.  I don't know what to do either...

  • I wake my 2 year old at 6:15 for the sitter.  He naps from 12:30-2:30 over there. Bedtime falls around 9.  My guy won't sleep unless he has been awake for 6-7 hours. On the weekends if he sleeps past 8am, I don't even try for a nap.  Just settle for an early bedtime.  If you are at home maybe try waking your LO by 7 am. If you want to do a nap?!

  • Yea try her nap time 20 minutes later, shift it more if that's not working, it sounds like she isn't tired enough
  • I would actually try laying her down earlier, maybe she's over tired. DS wakes up around 7:30 and goes down for a nap around 12:30. Also, maybe she's trying to be in control. If DS is fighting a nap, I will tell him he doesn't have to go to sleep but he must stay in bed lay quiet. I think it makes him feel like he has a choice. He will usually fall asleep. Occasionally he doesn't but resting keeps him from being a total bear.
Good luck! I dread giving up naps, I'm so productive during that time.

  • Mine has always been a sleep fighter, so when we had to switch to the toddler bed (she was climbing out and getting hurt), I had to sit next to her and basically hold her down. Now that I have another baby, she does quiet time in her room for at least 1.5 hours, starting at 1:00. Once every couple weeks, she'll surprise me and nap, but it's not often. She goes to bed at 7 and wakes around 6.

  • Mine doesn't nap anymore. She wakes around 7 and goes down around 7, but refuses to nap.
