Naming a second son after the Dad when first son is not

Bored at lunch so Ill ask you guys a question-  Am I the only one who thinks naming a second son after the dad is a touch odd or is this NBD?

The example I have seen was from 2 different marriages. First-born son was not named after dad, dad remarries, second son is.

My second born daughter has my middle name. Is this weird?
     Not weird.

  • Traditionally, it's the second son that carries the father's name. IE: My dad is son number two and he is a Jr.

In a blended family situation it seems like the first child could be offended but hey, maybe his mom didn't like the name much anyway?

  • Definitely odd.

My ex is the oldest of 3 boys.  The youngest is a Jr.  When I asked him about it, he said his mother couldn't think of any other boys names.  Wha?

Really?  Any links to anything confirming this?  Super curious, as I have never heard this before.

Yeah.  I have never heard this.  What if you never had a second son; you would've missed your chance...

  • Yes I think it's weird. Even weirder is I know someone whose H was renamed (legally) at 12 or 13 yrs old by his stepmother to his father's name.  She supposedly wanted to disassociate him with any connection to his bio mother.  To top it off he had an older brother who had some developmental issues so the stepmom didn't find him suitable to carry on the name.  The dad didn't say anything about it either and just let her do it.

I can actually think of one really famous instance of this - Henry VIII was a second son, and he only became king because his older brother Arthur died in his teens.

  • I think it's odd in the same family, but let's say the father had a son from a previous relationship and then gets married to another woman, I see nothing wrong with naming that son a Jr.

  • I don't think it's weird. My grandparents did this ? second son named after his father. I have always assumed it was a cultural (French) thing but never looked into it.

But, yeah, I think anything goes when the kids have different mothers.

  • I find the whole JR thing odd anyways. Its just not for me. But this scenario seems even more odd.

  • To me it's like saying the first son wasn't good enough to pass the name on to.

Is this because the first son would be named after his grandfather? Is that how that would work?

  • I think it's odd. I would also assume that there was a second marriage, and that the two brothers were half brothers. I don't know why I would assume that though.

  • I think it's odd but I think naming a kid after yourself is odd anyway. I suppose the first wife was against it so dad got his way with wife #2.

What's strange about that is what if you never had a second son? Interesting.

  • My cousin's husband is the third, yet he has an older brother that does not have a family name.  I have always thought that was weird.
