Fussy/ Constipated when switching from breast to formula

I added two bottles of formula yesterday bc I'm trying to get him off the breast. He was the worst he has ever been and a tad constipated. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it the type of formula? Any tips on making the transition greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Fussy/ Constipated when switching from breast to formula

  • Human breastmilk is easily digestible, which is why breastfed babies have runny poop.  Cow's milk is not easily digestible by people and I think any formula you switch to is going to have this issue.  When we supplemented with DS1, he was extrememly constipated the few months he had formula with his breastmilk.  He'll eventually adjust to formula, but it might take awhile.  You can always try a different brand if you think it's the brand, but I bet it's just because formula and breastmilk are not anywhere near the same and his body is adjusting to a new food. Mixing half breastmilk and half formula bottles for awhile might help.  You might ask you pedi if they reccommend a brand or adding something (like prune juice or miralax) if he gets really constipated.

  • I just switched my daughter and it stopped her up for a few days but after two or three days of prune juice she is regular again.  It will pass!
  • We switched to formula at two weeks and he became fussy and had clay like stools. When baby turned 4 weeks Dr recommended 1ounce of prune juice with 1 bottle once a day. It has worked wonders! Normal stools and less fussy. I skipped a day of prune juice and his stool was harder again so we have continued the prune juice routine
