Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Wakes MOTN for soothing?

DS gets up to eat twice a night, sometimes just once. After the feeding around 3:30-4am, he usually wakes about an hour later and has to be rocked back to sleep. He then starts a pattern of waking after that every 40 min - 1hour for the same thing he's fine all night but then fights his swaddle or needs to be soothed after that. Any thoughts what to do? He's 3.5 mos. Thanks

  • Sympathizing with you.  My 2.5 month old is on the EXACT pattern.  Will be interested to hear others' responses.

the fun part is this week my 3 y/o decided to wake every night when he does and scream to go downstairs :/ we then enter a cycle of them waking each other for the rest of the night

  • I personally think it could be a growth spurt OP. I think you just have to roll with it, and just cuddle and soothe him like you have been for right now. If it is a growth spurt, he won't be having one for long. Good luck!

    i hope so, thanks!

  • I could have written your post. I am in same situation with my LO who is the same age.

Sleeps fine till 3:30....At 3:30 I go in and soothe---paci, rub head, pat back. He goes back down till about 4:15 and the is up every 20 min or so till about 5:30 AM when I cave and take him to bed with me.

Then he lays down on my chest and sleeps till 6:30 or 7:00----Im afraid I spoiled him!

  • My DD used to wake frequently as it got closer to morning. One of us would resort to sleeping with her on our chest. I don't really have any solid tricks for you to try. It was just something she grew out of. Sorry! I hope it gets better soon.

  • I learned with my first son that infants have a really hard time sleeping around dawn. There is something with their brains that makes it really hard for them to sleep solid around that time. We were told by a sleep coach that around 5 a.m. all bets are off.  If you need to take him in your bed it's okay at that time, I was told by a postpartum doula.  I don't think it's possible to spoil an infant with too much snuggling.... :)
  • I'm having the same issue! Between teething and introducing solids I've been wondering if he's in pain from his teeth or has a belly ache from the food since he's just adjusting. Hope it passes!
