Parenting after a Loss

How cold is too cold to take baby out?

My daughter is almost 9 weeks old and we live in a cold, urban area. My cabin fever is out of control! Yesterday, we had a "heat wave" at 39 degrees, so I bundled baby girl up and we took a long walk. It did wonders for my psyche.

Today it only hit 27 and I was too nervous to take her out. Do you think I could have if she were adequately bundled? Or, is that air too cold to (even) hit a little bit of her face for an extended period?

Anyone have a temperature rule of thumb for a baby this small?

  • I think 27 is probably too cold.

  • I've only been taking LO out when it's around 40 or above.

Why don't you put baby in the car and go walk around a heated mall?

That's what I'd do.  Head to anywhere covered and heated.

  • I would take her out to run her to the car and go somewhere indoors but not to be outside for an extended period of time. At that age we didn't take DD outside (other than to the car) if it was under 60 degrees haha (we live in a warm climate though so that is cold for us.)

This exactly! 27 is too cold in my eyes. I don't take DS out if it's in the 40's.

  • If I have to put mittens on then I think it's too cold for baby, because their little face is sensitive and shouldn't be exposed...so I would say 27 would be too cold.

  • Apparently I'm in the minority.  I take DD out all the time in the cold.  I've taken her out in anything above 0.  We go XC skiing all the time as well as walks and other outdoor activities.  I bundle her up and check on her often.

I would do that with DS now, but not as a newborn.  They don't have great body temperature control yet.  Granted, I have little experience with true cold seeing as my main issue with taking DS outside for more than just in and out of the car as a newborn was waiting until it was under 90 in the evenings...  As a toddler, though, or even an older baby, I'd wrap him up and take him out.

  • If I were doing much more outside than walking to and from the car at those temps at that age, I'd be wearing him and we'd be bundled up together ::ie big coat around both of us::. I'd want my body to be helping keep him warm and toasty.

  • Depends where you live, what you are used to, and how prepared (With the right equipment) you are. Where we live at about 9 weeks we would go walking down to 5 degrees.  Now, at 8 months, we go out up to -20.  DS has never had any issues from it, but like I said, the weather is like that all the time here and we have the right snowsuits and sleds for it.
