nighttime.grumps

The girls.are.9weeks.today, but.it.is.also.their.edd. They have woken up.a bit this week. They have been.home.for.three weeks. Also.this.week.we have finally.transitioned to.breastfeeding exclusively (no.more bottles.of.ebm!!). During.the day they are.reasonably.pleasant when.awake, but come.7pm.ish it.is.all.downhill for the next twelve hours or so. During.the day tbey will nap and.sleep.whereever, but at night they will.not.stay asleep.unless they are.being held. Itndoean't matter how.long they are.sleeping.for.prior.to.going.down, they.instantly wake.up.and.scream. not.hungry, not.wet...juat plain.old.pissed.off. if.it.were.something i.were eating, wouldn't they be screaming during the day.too? Daytime is.fine. i say "they" but they seem to alternate nights as.to.who the.dominant fussy.one/sleep.refuser.is. i.can't sleep.when.they do.during the day b/c i have two other kids(age 6 and 22.months). My.other kids.were easy babies. I don't know.why this.is happening.or wht to do.about it

Re: nighttime.grumps

  • Something similar happened when my LOs reached their EDD....someone here called it "coming out of the preemie fog". They also get fussy around dinnertime every night and continue needing lots of attention...holding, walking, etc...until bedtime. Luckily we have gotten to the point 2 weeks later where they'll go down to sleep with just a little fussing; after their bedtime feeding we swaddle them, put them in their cribs, kiss them goodnight and turn on their mobiles....and they seem to be getting the hang of this routine and will sleep until they wake up to eat.

So yeah I don't really know what advice to give besides "hang in there!" If they are really inconsolable it could be diet related and something to ask the pedi about....but other than that, at least know you're not alone. GL!

  • Sounds like how our boys colic started....they were born at 38 weeks and this started about 3 weeks after they were born....the nightimes were horrible and they were inconsolable but during the day they were not so bad....I hope this isn't the case for you but if it is know that it will come to an end but man I feel for you....no sleep = no fun, especially not when you have other little ones to care for!

  • Our girls are pretty dang fussy starting at 5pm, and that goes on until we feed them at 8pm and put them down for the night. DD2 goes down pretty easily, but we usually have to fight DD1 to get her down. Once we do, they usually sleep until midnight, feed again, sleep until 4AM, feed again, and then generally up again around 7AM. Granted, this is on a good night ... it doesn't always go this smoothly!
