Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Constipation and regularity issues!

My poor lo absolutely cannot get regular with stools! He has been on solids now for 2 months and it has been a struggle! He strains to poop and will sometimes get out a very firm piece but you can tell he is still trying to relieve himself. It's terrible to see, I feel so bad! We give water with meals and throughout day and prune juice which helps sometimes but I have had to turn to using a rectal thermometer occ to help ( what they used to do back in the day I guess as some of our family has shared) relieve him. The doctor says this is ok but since our last visit a month ago seems to be happening more. Anyone else dealing with this? What are you doing to keep your lo's regular or help when they are constipated? Ideas wanted! Thanks!

Re: Constipation and regularity issues!

  • Ugh! I so know what you are going through, and sadly my DS knows what your DS is going through :(  It's so hard to watch them struggle and I HATE finding those little hard poop pellets in his diaper.

I posted about this a little bit ago and got some great advice to offer water, pear or prune juice with every meal - which you already said you are doing - and I also make sure he has a serving of prunes, pears, peaches or mangoes at least once a day.  This has really seemed to be working for us.  For you, maybe you try those types of foods 2 times a day for at least a week and then go down to once a day. I'm also starting to mix pears into the veggie purees I make for DS.

Does your LO eat rice cereal a lot?  I know that can add to constipation.

I'm sorry you are going through this too, it's not fun... but it has gotten a lot better for us, so I'm sending positive thoughts your way! HTH and I hope your little guy feels better.

  • Thanks! No rice cereal in his diet! it is very hard! I will try increasing the prune juice or prune intake along with the other things you both suggested!!
  • Stick to the P's....pumpkin, pears and prunes work for my LO.
  • My daughter has this same problem. It got do bad a few times that we had to use suppositories. Ive tried prunes everydsy and prar/apple juice. Water. Nothing helped. Our ped recommended a little miralax everyday. She gets .5 tsp in 2 of her bottles each day. Works like a charm!
So happy for my BFPB Steff13914 and her new twins! Welcome to the world sweet babies:) Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Sadly my LO knows exactly what your little one is going through!  We have not been able to regulate his poops!

I've fed him pears, prunes, peaches... you name it. I give him prune or apple juice and that doesn't help either.  I started adding a 1/4 tsp of miralax to his juice, but he doesn't drink the juice... I'm starting to think he can taste the miralax.  I may try adding it to breast milk and see if he'll take it.

I have tried glycerine suppositories and they do work, but it takes a long time and sometimes he'll poop it out several hours later and it hasn't dissolved much. I bought the store brand, I'm not sure what's going on there.

What I have found to work best if it has been 3+ days since a poop, is liquid glycerin suppositories by fleet.  Oh, it works! A lot! If you get desperate, try these.  They are a God send.
