Help me cope....

Oh my....tomorrow is my last day at home with LO. I go back to work on Wednesday.Any ideas on how to make this transition easier?.....mostly for me...I think LO will be fine! LOL!

DH was supposed to be home this week. Specifically asked his boss for home office days which he was granted. Then, unfortunately, his boss decided he was needed at a conference in Las Vegas. Grr......don't people realize how hard this is?????? It would be much better if DH was home!

I am going to be a hot mess on Wednesday morning.

I plan to lay out all clothes the night before. Also night before will lay out his clothes for day and get his bath things ready for the night so all I need to do is grab them, saving time in the evening.

My lunch will be made night before.

Although not a preference by me----will shower at night

Planning on getting LO down between 9-9:30. Will use between 9:30 and 11:00 to get stuff done---prep for next day, grading papers, planning, etc.

Alarm set for 5:30. Will use between 5:30 and whenever LO gets up (usually between 6:30-7:00) to also do school work if possible.

See---Logistically I seem ready....I just don't know what to do about the emotional piece. UGH!

Re: Help me cope....

  • As a fellow teacher I appreciate your planning......just try not to overthink it. I'm looking forward to going back to work in three weeks. When I dropped of DD for the first time I made sure all of our stuff was ready to go the night before. Definitely made the morning a lot easier. I still lay out her stuff the night before she goes to preschool now and I'm still out.

  • Get waterproof mascara. Dont put your make up on until after you drop the baby off. Keep pictures with you. STAY BUSY!

  • Will your DH be available for you to call after you drop LO off at daycare? I called DH and he listened to me cry for a bit. Once I got that done, I went and got myself coffee as a treat for making it through my first drop off. I also made a point to call his teacher to check on him and I went to visit during my lunch.

Good luck! I'll be thinking about you!

  • Good luck! I'm not back FT yet, but having as much ready to go is very helpful in the morning. I try to focus on what needs to get done, and not on the fact that I'm leaving him.

And ditto what Candace said about mascara and pics.

  • I'm a teacher too...  Actually, just started this career when I went back to work, so I had a double whammy of new-ness.  I've felt too busy with the constant stream of planning, lunch duty, study hall duty, and the influx of middle schoolers to sit and feel sad too much. Maybe with such a busy job like teaching, you'll be the same way. :)   I teared up a little on the first day, but I've done pretty well...  If I'd kept my old office job, I probably would have just been sad about him all day because I had too much downtime.  Now, I'm busy all day, then boom, it's time to pick him up and snuggle! :)  Hope it turns out the same way for you!

I do a similar routine... Shower the night before, clothes out for both of us, bottles and anything else for daycare ready, and up at 5.

  • I still have two weeks before I go back, so no advice. Plus, I'm a hot mess just thinking about it! Good luck! You seem to be on the right track!

  • I'm a teacher too and went back last week. I was obviously sad leaving the first morning but have been soooo busy during the day that I don't think of LO as much as I thought I would. I feel like a bad mom because of that but it's a good thing in a way.
I have always showered and made my lunch the night before... I get up at 530 and leave my house by 615. I haven't figured out how to do schoolwork at home during the week yet. All I want to do is spend time with LO once I'm home. So I'm trying to get as much done during prep and before school starts. Sunday will be a schoolwork kind of day since DH will be home.
    Good luck!

  • I applaud you teachers! Ya'll just don't get enough thanks for teaching our kiddos! I have a 2nd and 4th grader, we've had our share of good and bad...but the good ones are amazing!

As far as day 1 of work goes, I made sure to have tissues in the van and I took pictures of us together, him alone, and him with his teacher. Memories!
    KEEP CALM and LATCH ON!

  • I went back last Friday, but now I am home with the flu.

I am a teacher and like you I lay out all the clothes and do the same.  It has been a pretty easy transition.  I can text his teacher whenever and she will give me updates on his day.  He is right across the hall from me so I can go check in on him if I need to, but I try not to too much.  It makes me want to take him home if I'm with him too much!
