penne alla vodka

Sorry, I have another dumb question...

I'm hosting a baby shower for my cousin this weekend and since she's having a girl were doing a pink theme. One of the suggestions I found online was for penne alla vodka since the sauce is pinkish. Now as I'm writing out my shopping list I'm having second thoughts. The vodka will cook off, but is it still weird/inappropriate to serve something with vodka in the title at a baby shower?  WDYT?

Re: penne alla vodka

  • I wouldnt personally think twice about it. It isn't like they card a child in a restaurant if they want to order it :

  • I've had it at baby showers.  Also wine sauce at baby showers.   I don't think it's weird, it's delicious!   I guess have another option in case a pregnant woman isn't comfortable eating it, but I would eat it!

Also you can call it pink sauce or tomato cream sauce if you want.

  • I don't think so. I found out on the baby showers board that its even common to serve booze at showers! We don't do it in my circle, but I had to hold on to my pearls when I realized I was in the minority.

So, serve the pasta, but maybe have another alternative like simple pasta tossed in olive oil with basil and tomato. I think two pastas should be good.

  • I wouldn't think twice about it, either - but then, I've had vodka at baby showers, so vodka sauce is pretty tame Smile

If you're really concerned about it, ask the mother-to-be how she feels about it.

  • I think it's totally fine! However, if you're not comfortable, you could do a marinara/alfredo mix, which will also look pink. I think vodka sauce is common enough that people realize it's safe.

I'm totally old school on that too, I think it is tacky to serve something the guest of honor can't have.

I won't have another pasta dish, but we will have little pinwheel sandwiches, a salmon mousse on cucumber slices, a pink grapefruit salad, cupcakes, and strawberry marbled cheesecake. I just wanted the pasta for a non meat option. :)

  • LOL I was almost 20 when I had my first child we had chips and dip, a sandwhich platter and cake. I am sure my MIL now who is a big planner would have a small stroke if she knew about my baby shower 13 years ago

  • Penne vodka is my favorite pregnancy meal!  Go for it!

  • I wouldn't serve it. Alcohol doesn't cook off as quickly as we used to think it did.

This.  There's an Italian restaurant here that serves a dish with marinara and alfredo on it that my daughters always have to get because it makes pink sauce.

  • I would LOVE it if I went to a shower and that was served. Mmm mmmm mmmm. Yum!

I don't think this is correct. A child could walk into a grocery store and purchase a jar of vodka sauce. If it were a risk, they would be checking ID for it.

I totally get that, and if I were hosting, I would make sure to ask the MTB how she felt about it. If she'd prefer not to have any alcohol, we wouldn't have any. But personally, my ideal shower would be a low-key backyard affair including beer and/or summer cocktails, along with delicious N/A options - it doesn't bother me to be around people who are drinking, and it's not like people are going to get trashed at a baby shower (at least not the ones I've been to!). The guests are going to spend some time watching me open gifts, which isn't the most exciting way to spend an afternoon - I won't begrudge them a glass of wine during that. I might even have a half a glass with them!

Actually, it is correct if you are making the sauce homemade.
