Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Early Risers/Sleep easy question...

Hi ladies!

So, I started using the sleep easy method about 2 weeks ago - and boy, what a difference it has made for us here. My son went from being up 5-10 times a night and mostly co-sleeping with us, to sleeping in his crib from 7pm to at least 4am (sometimes 5am) with a couple fusses in between. It's just crazy!

Now, my question - that early wake up time - how can I possibly go about fixing it?

He is generally hungry at 4am - I've tried "dream feeding" at about 3:45-4 before he wakes up, and it doesn't seem to change it much. He does get upset if I just leave him to fuss, because I'm sure by that time he is surely hungry.. right?

He never sleeps past 5am though, and I was sooo hoping that would change after the sleep training. But I am still so grateful for the changes we've made, just looking to see if anyone else has had this?

Also, the sleep easy book says that babies need 11-12 hours of sleep (and a minimum of 10.5)... My son is definitely not getting that, maybe sometimes 10.5. Maybe he just doesn't need that extra sleep? I feel like he would benefit so much from a little extra, but I can't for the life of me get him to go back down in the morning!

Re: Early Risers/Sleep easy question...

  • I have the same problem. Accept I dont mind my LO getting up at 5:30am because thats when I get up for work. But normally she wakes up at 4:45 or 5am. That extra 30 mins is great.

The first week and half of training she slept 11 to 11 1/2 hours now that we are like 3-4 weeks in she will get 10 - 10.5. I tried putting to bed earlier but that did not help. I started pushing back bed time by 10 mins and that helps a bit, but not full proof.

Some babies don't need 11 hours sleep also.

  • My LO goes down around 6/6:30pm and wakes up around 5am every morning to eat. I just change & then feed her right in the nursery. No lights, no talking to her. She gets that it's not Wake Up time yet and she'll fall asleep while nursing Then I put her back down. She generally sleep til 6:30-7am. My only suggestion is make it clear that is not wake up time for the day by not really "interacting" with LO just doing the change, feed, bed.

    This exactly!!
  • Dream feeding helped solve this for DS, but I did it about 2-3 hours after his last bedtime bottle (so around 9:00 or 10:00 pm). This way he could go back to sleep and get a good long deep sleep.

This is what we were doing until a week ago. We did a dream feed at 11 it worked great he slept until 7 after that.

  • My LO is an 8-9 hour sleeper.  He always has been (since 8 weeks).  His most normal sleep is from 8pm-5am or so.  He never sleeps past 6am.  Sometimes due to daycare, he will fall asleep at 6pm, in those cases we dream feed him at 10pm or he would be up by 3am.

Try your dream feeding at 10 or 11pm rather than at 4am when he's not in a very deep sleep.

Some LO just don't get their 11 hours in a row.

Half the time my LO gets up at 5am, we feed him and he sleeps from 6-8a.  Half the time he's up at 5 and ready to play!
