Babies: 6 - 9 Months

He HATES the hi chair

I started putting my guys in the hi chair around 4 months just to get them accustomed to it. Recently (last month or so), my one LO screams and carries on the whole time he's in it. He eats a few bites if food then begins to scream and throw somewhat if a tantrum. I try to ignore him hoping he is just looking for attention and stops but it doesn't. He eats through the screams but is relentless until we take him out. Any suggestions?? Meal time is NOT fun this way.

  • My LO always cries right when we put him in but once I have him toys he's happy. We have a toy that suctions to his chair and I also give him a few teether toys. They get dirty but they are all easy to wash off and he stays happy!

I give him all his favorite toys and even tried the suction cup toy also...nothing keeps him happy :(

  • Please, don't ignore your LO when he screams. When your LO cries he is looking for you to comfort him... Ignoring him simply teaches him that you don't care about his troubles. Try speaking firmly to him and say "no" if you feel it is appropriate, but ignoring is never a good thing!

Anyway, enough of that rant. Make the High Chair a place for fun! Give him his favorite snacks, toys, and other treats while he is in it. Don't let him sit in there and cry or he will get a bad taste about it. Once he realizes that the high chair equals fun, he should stay in there for longer periods of time.

I dont actually ignore him (I would never turn my back on my child when hes upset), I just dont encourage the behavior by picking him up immediately. Hes not screaming crying, he is screaming yelling out of protest. Ive tried all his toys, noises, faces, singing etc. He just isnt feeling it...I am hoping someone else has experienced this and has some tricks that I havent thought of!

  • I have no idea what kind you have, we went with just a seat that attaches to our chair. So ours has a tray and straps her in. Anyway is maybe the tray too tight or straps. Or maybe try without the tray so LO has more free movements...

I haven't experienced this yet, LO likes it for now. But just a few thoughts, good luck!

  • I could have written this post! DS only seems to yell when in his high chair. He's surrounded by toys but still yells (even while eating). I don't know what it could be...
