J's fever is getting higher (up to 104.7), the nurse hasn't called me back, and DH took our only car to work. Should I be rushing him to the hospital? And why won't the freaking pedi call me back?! He is so hot and lethargic and I'm in tears.
Call pdei back and tell receptionist lady not to hang up, tell her to go peek her head in wherever the doc is and ask if u should go to the hosp. Be firm and shw will do it.
Get some cold cloths for his head, or put him in a lukewarm bath, get him cooled down under his armpits and on his temples and neck. If she doesn't call you in 15 minutes, I'd call a cab and get him to emerg.
DS has had a fever that high and the pedi on call just told me to give him Motrin and monitor the fever. How quickly his is temp rising? Can you call your DH and tell him to come home, just in case? Good luck, I hope your LO gets better quickly!
I'm sorry he's feeling bad!! A couple of weeks ago, DD had a summer virus that had an accompanying fever - it always would spike at night, and we were on the phone with the emergency nurse line three nights in a row. She got up to 104.6 and they didn't make us come in - anything under 105 they didn't need to see. They had us give her a lukewarm (not cold) sponge bath and Tylenol.
I hope he gets better soon and you hear from your dr.
Has it been a gradual increase or a huge jump? When we were in ER, they told us fever isn't dangerous until it reaches like 106 (or 108 maybe?). And even then, that's when it's a huge spike. Is he not responding to motrin/tylenol alternating?
Does he seem to be breathing OK? Is he drinking fluids? When you say lethargic do you mean less responsive than normal, or just quiet and tired? Most ppl say it is more about behavior than the actual temp but I am sure I'd be worried too. Esp since high fevers can cause the heart to race and I'd also want his oxygen checked. How long has it been since you called the Dr?
eta: I agree that lukewarm baths or cloths are good, but never do a cold bath for a child with a fever.
I agree with pp in asking receptionist to just grab the doc. I have called the nurse line at my pedi several times in a row until someone calls me back...
Do not put cold cloths on him--the shivering can actually increase his temp. Make sure they are lukewarm--this should help (either a bath or cloths like lanie said). My pedi said fevers do no harm unless they get above 106. I would also call the pedi back and be firm to the receptionist, and get a ride ready to go.

I would call the pedi and INSIST that you speak to her. If not, take him to the ER... but if you could get teh pedi, it would be best, cuz you could have to wait at the ER
Ditto the cool compresses. Also you can put rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and swab the back of his ears and neck. Alcohol helps to draw heat from the skin.
We ended up in the ER when DS had a fever over 104 but we were out of town, he wasn't responding to meds and then he started throwing up.
One recommendation they gave for high fevers was to do both Tylenol and Motrin- start both at the same time, then once 4 hours is up do more Tylenol, then 2 hour later Motrin, etc.- then his system always has one drug in it. This was the only thing that broke his fever- you could ask your pedi about this too.

Sorry Judah is feeling so sick!

Can you just take a cab to your pedi's office?
I got a call back and we won't go in unless the fever goes over 105.
I'm going to give him a lukewarm bath right now. Thanks ladies. I was freaking out as I'm sure you can all understand.
Ugh, I'm sorry!
DS had a 103 fever this weekend and we went to the ER (double ear infection and a virus) but it's so hard to see them in pain.
Good luck and I hope he is feeling better!
i hope he feels better, i have nothing to add above what anyone else said.
I highly doubt the ER will tell you whether or not to come in...liability.
Hope he feels better!!!!

I hope everything's ok!!

Hugs- I know how scary high fevers can be.
