Slight flat head!!

V has developed a slight flat head right in the center on the back on his perfect c section head.  I have the noggin nest and he sleeps in RNP at night and cnaps in co-sleeper and mamaroo swing.  Should I get it checked out by pedi? I'm worried!

TIA!

Re: Slight flat head!!

  • My LO has a slightly flat head. Dr mentioned it but said he wasn't concerned and that it happens to many babies. He just suggested more tummy time. My LO sleeps in the rnp also and I think that's the major cause, if you look at amazon reviews a lot of people complain about that . I put 2 blankets in between the hard plastic and the cover. She also has the noggin nest in her swing which she naps in.

  • If it's slight, they will most likely recommend more tummy time. My LO had a slight flat head at her 2 month check up and I was advised 60-90 minutes of tummy time a day.
  • My little guy has had a flat spot for a while.  The pedi said it wasn't bad at all and like PPs said - just do more tummy time during the day.  I've noticed it's starting to get better now that he spends half of his awake time on his tummy.  Once they start to roll over and sit more, it should correct itself.

  • I'm an orthotist and part of my job is to make helmets for babies with flat heads. For mild flat spots, we recommend more tummy time.  It's actually fairly common for the head to be flatter on the upper back of the head where the posterior fontanelle (soft spot) is.  If it gets to the point where the head shape looks wider than it is long, I would recommend getting it checked out.

  • My LO has has a flat spot, but it's on the back.  Unfortunately last week we did not tummy time him at all since he was sick and now there's a bald spot!  I'm sure he'll outgrow it but it's a bit funny looking for now.

  • My son has a slight flat spot on the back of his head also. His is on the right side because of how he perfers to sleep. Tummy time it is!

Oh my. 60-90 minutes We are lucky if we get 15 minutes. Although he is in his carrier a lot (with me wearing him). Man, my little guy hates tummy time. Our ped said most kids do.

You don't have to do the 60-90 min all at once.  10 min here, 15 min there, etc is fine.  Also, my pedi said that anything where she is not on her back counts towards this.  We have a jumperoo type thing and a Mamas and Papas Baby Snug to help give her more time off her back when we can't necessarily hold her.

    exactly this.

  • William has a slight flat spot behind his right ear, because of sleeping with his head turned right every night in his RNP... I change his head angle and he changes it right back. We are using the noggin nest right now, and he gets tummy time. I may try what a PP suggested and put a soft blanket underneath the RNP cover so it's more cushioned.

  • Thank you all! I moved V from RNP to co sleeper for night now and have the noggin nest in place.  He sleeps through the night 8 hours so now I feel a ton better than his flat spot is supported.  Hopefully in the next month or so the spot will be better.

I appreciate all the responses. V gets about 15 min of tummy time, he hates it royally.

I'm thinking of getting my snug seat out.  I think he will be able to handle it now.  He's been a bobble head up until a few weeks ago.
