Croup turn to cold?

We had to take LO to immediate care about a week and a half ago. By the sound of his cough, they instantly knew it was croup, but he'd already had a chest x-ray and they also gave him an air treatment with an air tank. He did great with that, not even needing the mask because he was sucking on the end and getting in all the air (: Then they gave him a medicine to take once for 3 days. It helped a ton.

But he's still sick. He has a cough but not a croup cough. And he has a pretty runny snotty nose. Also, now MY throat has been killing me and I have a bad cough and runny snotty nose too.

Can croup progress into a cold, or could it have faded away and then he caught a cold right after? Also my cold is making me think it's NOT just a cold but I have no idea what else it could be..

Re: Croup turn to cold?

  • I think my LO had croup. I never took him to the pedi to confirm but based on the sound of the dry, barking cough it was not a typical cough. Anyway, it did progress to a wet cough/cold after a few days. The "cold" then lasted for about 1 month.

DS had croup. After a week it turned into more of a cold, which lasted another 2-3 weeks.

This. We're at the one week mark, and it's more 'cold' than croup.

  • Okay good to know! Thanks ladies and yes the croup sound cough is only supposed to last a few days, we just took LO in because he was having such a hard time breathing :/ anyway his 'cold' seems to be getting better! Hopefully any day now (:

  • Same here...

Croup cough and a few days later streight into the cold.  My little guy was miserable for a few days and now that his temp is back to normal he just has the wet cough that still sounds pretty bad.  Hope your little one feels better soon.

  • Same here too!

My little guy got hit by croup in the middle of the night with a crazy high fever. They put him on steriods that seemed to work pronto. The barking cough was done the next day but it seems to have turned into a yucky cold.

We are two days post the bad croup night and he's just suffering bad cold symptoms, sleeping a lot. His temp was actually really low, only 94 this morning, that reverse fever can make you feel even crappier sometimes.

Hoping he can shake this soon. Tylenol is taking the edge off.

Thanks for the thread, it's made me feel better knowing we're not alone!
