TTC after 35

Introducing myself - having a hard time...

I was on the Nest for a long time and have been lurking on this board a little bit.  I have one child, but for various reasons DH and I waited a long time to decide to be ready to TTC #2 and now I am 41.  I didn't start charting closely and using OPK's until this cycle but we were trying for three months before that.  Our timing was good this month but based on the way I am feeling right now I really think AF is on her way so another month of BFN.

Our first child was conceived on the first try so I am not used to these cycles of trying and then waiting and then being disappointed and I have to say I am having a really hard time with this.  It does not help that I am emotional due to PMS and also have a feeling that we just waited too freaking long and this will not happen.  My OB who I loved retired several months ago and the practice I am currently in is a nightmare as far as getting appointments, etc. so I am switching to someone I am hoping will be more proactive.

So how do you not obsess over your cycles and make yourself crazy?  And because of my age it is not too early to go for intervention right?  Are there any success stories out there that may give me some hope as I am losing faith fast.

TIA

Re: Introducing myself - having a hard time...

  • Welcome to the board Tia, how not to obsess over my cycles? hmmmmm I do obsess, but I limit obsession from O to AF. It is possible, just go browse the pregnant >35 board, lots of ladies over there and I know one of the ladies is at least 41...at this age many of need a little or a lot of help so don't waste much time at the OB, get to an RE. Ob are in the business of birthing, RE are in teh business of getting you pregnant!!

Don't lose hope, you must remain positive or its just going to be a miserable time for you.

  • Welcome!  I agree that taking a peek over at the Pregnant after 35 board will make you feel a lot better.  It DOES happen!  I am about to turn 41 myself so I go over to that board a lot to keep the hope alive.  Good luck!

  • Thanks to both of you...I know I am only a few months in and should not be down in the dumps already.  I was just very hopeful this month and to be disappointed again is rough.

Thanks also on the advice about the RE.  I do have the number of one I intend to call - I thought it would be best to talk to the OB/GYN first but maybe that is not necessary?

  • I am 7 mths TTC and I found the first 4 mths harder than the last 3.  I have learned not to get my hopes up.  I did buy Wondfo pregnancy tests (see Amazon for these) along with OPK (Wondfo's also since they are the cheapest around).  I would talk with your insurance company and find out about coverage & after that make an appt with an RE to get some baseline testing done.  Insurance may not cover it right away - let your carrier tell you how long you have to wait, if at all.  I had to wait 6 mths.  I finally am going to see my RE next Monday for our first appt.  I am 42, turning 43 in a couple of mths - so I know how you feel.  Time is not on our side unfortunately.  I feel 30, but unfortunately my birth certificate says otherwise... • Welcome to the group and good luck.  I understand your frustration.  I am older like you, I am 43 and have no kids.  Like the other ladies have mentioned, when you get a little frustrated or down just go over to the 35+ and prego board and read some of their success stories. I know it makes me feel better and encouraged to keep moving forward.....

Agreed!  I'll be 41 in a few months, so I know how you feel.  We were able to get pregnant with the help of an RE and we are so lucky to have her, especially now that we're trying again.   Welcome to the board and good luck!

  • Welcome and good luck! When we began trying, I just went to my OBGYN. After a CP, he was like "don't worry, at least you know you CAN get pregnant, give it a year"  But he said, "if you want to move forward get your husband tested and get an HSG for yourself"  We thought the HSG wasn't covered by insurance, so we waited...because doc told me it was at least $400.  So 6 months later after trying...husband got his test and I got my HSG. Come to find out...his did show abnormalities and my left tube was blocked. And insurance DID cover the HSG.  I wish I had just gone to an RE to begin with and we might be further along in the process.  They are great about checking insurance coverage and specialize in fertility. The obgyn worries about pregnancies.  Hope that helps!
