Baby ikea?

Has anyone bought their baby an ikea crib, high chair or changing table? I love the styles but I'm concerned they won't be safe since they are so cheap. Especially the cribs. Anyone got one before?

Re: Baby ikea?

  • We are considering the Ike's crib too but its on my list to read more about. Thanks for posting the question!

  • I've seen both the crib and the high chair get rave reviews on several sites. I read about moms doing away with their design high chair in favor of the 20$ Ikea one.

Their baby furniture is in compliance with both US and European safety regulations and is as safe as more expensive stuff. We're defenitely buying both of those there.

  • I actually saw one of the ikea cribs on consumers reports and it had a very good rating!

  •  I have a changing table and loved it with my first.  My folks bought all her nursery furniture, but i wanted an extra changing table for the downstairs since i had a csection and did not want to be going up and down stairs all the time.  I wouldn't just the furniture by price.  IKEA stuff is pretty sturdy.  I bought a toddler crib from them and am pretty happy with it.  I plan to get DD's new bedroom furniture from them.  they have a lot of fun kids stuff.

  • I've heard nothing but great things about their baby furniture! Their cribs are consistently some of the best rated, least expensive available!

  • We have been using our ikea crib for two years now and it is still in great shape. We have the Gulliver crib in the birch color. We plan on transitioning DS to a big boy bd and using the crib for this LO. We have been using the Ikea mattress but I will be replacing that because there is now a big gap between it and the crib side which is not safe.

For our changing table we used an Ikea Expedition shelf turned on its side with legs added to it to give some height. We put bins in the shelves that held all of the diapers, pjs, clothes, etc. It worked out really well.

ETA:  stupid ipad autocorrect - we used an expedit shelf, not expedition shelf.

  • I don't have it personally, but they get very good reviews in the Baby Bargains book and I have a friend who has the crib and loves it.

  • I don't know anything about the ratings on the Ikea cribs and whatnot, but we were just there on Saturday and we checked out the nursery furniture.  The cribs seemed very small compared to cribs I've seen elsewhere.

The also look cheap, as if they could fall apart if you bump into them.  However, that's obviously not the case since PPs said they got great reviews.

  • I doubt they would sell something that wouldn't be safe.
  • Thank you everyone! We live in NW Florida and are making a special trip to Georgia after we find out the gender to get to Ikea. I'm so excited now!
  • DD has all Ikea furniture and it has held up great forgot the name but it is white and gray don't know if it is still available! Her changing station, crib, and organizational pieces still look new and have been sturdy. I have another friend with Ikea baby items and they love it as well.

  • I'm glad you posted this because I've been wondering the same thing! With two little ones on the way, I'm trying to cut costs but not quality/safety at the same time.
  • We are planning to get an Ikea crib for this LO.  DS will have just turned 2 when this LO comes and we plan to keep him in his crib and get a second crib.  Since we'll be buying a second crib I'm opting for a cheaper route, hence Ikea (his is not Ikea).  I've only heard good things about the Ikea cribs and was happy with them when I looked at them in the store.

  • The only baby furniture from Ikea that I have is their high chair. And I love it! We used it with DD and will probably buy another one for this next LO.

The best part about it: It's all plastic!!! You can throw it in the shower for a good hose down. Trust me, when LO starts self-feeding and/or playing with food, things get really messy really fast.

  • We bought the ikea 2 drawer chest with the changing table attachment (I forget the name) and love it, very sturdy, and have been using it for 2 years. We originally bought DD a more expensive crib online, and we ended up side-carring that crib to my side of the bed for the first year, and bought an ikea crib for her room for naps, and well that is all she sleeps in now. (We transitioned her to her room at night at a year) It is very sturdy and has worked out wonderfully. Her original crib will now be the new LOs crib, since the ikea crib is now "her" crib, and can be converted to a toddler bed when she is ready.

  • We'll be getting two Ikea Cribs for the twins. I've read that they are safe and very durable over time. Can't beat the price point either!
  • Check the consumer reports, when I was pregnant with DD one of their cribs was rated very high and was on a bunch of top 10 lists in my magazines.

  • The IKEA cribs are definitely safe and meet all the newest safety requirements in the US. In this case, inexpensive does not mean substandard, although they are very basic cribs that can fit a standard mattress.  We have the Sundvik crib and it's sturdy and looks good.  I didn't want to pay a lot for baby furniture that would only get used for a few years, so it fits our needs with it's simple modern styling and a lower, smaller footprint and profile.  A lot of people use the IKEA Hemnes drawers for storage/changing area and the Expedit bookshelves for cubby storage.  We also have the Trofast pine shelves and drawers for toys and I like it for organizing clutter.
