Sneakers.  I think it depends on where you live as to what you say.  I moved to Raleigh from NY and I have always said sneakers.  They say tennis shoes down here in the south.

I agree that it's regional.  I adapt to wherever I live, and say what they say.

Shoes I would wear to the gym are sneakers. Shoes that I would wear to nicer events (like football games or when I go on vacations that I need to walk a lot) are tennis shoes.

For example: Nike Air Max = sneakers and Converse = tennis shoes
