Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Vaccines while sick?

DS has his 6 month appt Tuesday and has had a pretty bad cold since middle of last week. He seems to be on the mend...maybe...although you'd never tell from how his nights have been going. Anyway, I'm just curious if any of you know whether they'll still give him his 6 month vaccines? I believe the flu shot was also listed as something he'd get...I don't want to put off his shots much longer..he turned 6 months on December 26..but I also don't want to make him worse since his immune system isn't exactly working right now! Thoughts?

Re: Vaccines while sick?

  • They ask you if your LO has a fever and if they do, then no vaccines. We had to put off the second flu shot for a week because LO was still sick.

You can call tomorrow and ask your doctor too.

  • Agree with previous poster. LO had a cold when he got his flu booster at 7 months...they said as long as there's no fever, it is fine. BUT the nurse warned us the flu shot could prolong the length of the cold. Be sure to ask your doc about that and weigh your options.

  • I asked my pedi at this at 4mo, and he said it was totally ok as long as he didnt have a fever. LO ended up being really, really sick, and Im not blaming the shots, but I know they made it worse. I felt bad because I love my pedi, but I was really annoyed he told me not to worry at all.

Needless to say when LO had a little cold this time around as well, he gave me the option. I went ahead with it because I didnt want to wait until he's feeling better to give him 1-3 days of feeling yucky again.

Things went great this time around.

  • My LO had a cold and my pedi suggested we put the vaccine off until next time.  So we did.

  • DS turned 6 months on Dec 14, but our 6 month appt wasn't until Jan 2. I don't think it will hurt if you do decide to wait. We also split out shots up, so he won't get one of the 6 month shots until closer to 8 months. FWIW we have always split his shots up (no more than 2 at a time), and DS has never gotten sick afterward besides minor crankiness and slightly elevated temp (like 99). I am also looking at getting his flu shot at Walgeen's or CVS so I can find someone who uses a mercury-free single dose vial.

  • I would avoid the vaccines completely. A quick glance at the ingredients list was enough to do it for me. There's just something about injecting my child with aborted fetuses, aluminum, dead animal tissue, and formaldehyde that just doesn't sit well with me...

  • At DS 6 month appt he just started to show signs of a cold, but no fever.  Pedi gave me some medicine for him and said to come back next week for shots, cause he should be feeling better by then.

Sometimes it is possible to have a disagreement and have a reasonable discussion about the disagreement. That is not possible, when the person on one side makes ridiculous statements such as the one above.  Aborted fetuses are not in vaccines.  Cell lines that come from aborted fetuses are not aborted fetuses.  Even the Catholic church is ok with the vaccines.

  • DD was able to get her vaccines at 6mo appointment. Her temp was 100.1 and they said anything over 100.4 was considered a fever. It was our choice and we went ahead with the vaccines. She was OK with them. They would not do the flu shot at the same time because one vaccine interacts with the flu shot and can make reaction worse. They said to come back after 2 weeks for the flu shot. SHe is going in next monday.

  • I never give LO a vaccine if they are sick. My pedi will not either. It's too taxing on their system and if they were to ever have a reaction, you wouldn't know if it was the shot or the illness. I always wait until LO is healthy.

Without Heparin, I could have had another stroke or sent a clot to my baby. Thank God for dead pig intestinal juices!

     This is scare-tactic-y to me.

  • i would wait until he is healthy. we postponed the 2nd flu shot even though the fever had gone down just because i didnt want to take the chance.
