My DS is on zantac for reflux and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on getting him to take the medication.
We use the syringe the pharmacy gave us and at first he would spit most of it out, no matter what I did, so now we get the medication flavored at the pharmacy. He takes it a little better but still gags and spits up some of it. Putting it in his food just makes him not eat so I won't do that. I am at a loss and all his pedi said was stick it to the side of his mouth when administering it....obviously I have tried that with little success. Any advice is greatly appreciated!! TIA
Re: taking medication
Our LO has been on Zantac since 10 days so we've tried it all when it comes to giving her meds. She HATED it at first so we got to the point where we squeezed her cheeks to get it in her mouth. She screamed, I cried and HAD to figure something else out. We tried putting it in her bottle which seemed to work periodically but when she didn't finish her bottle then she wasn't getting all her meds. We used the paci to give it to her...yeh right! she wasn't having that! We finally figured out (after she was one meds for RSV) that it's the syringe type she doesn't like (at ths point). If it's the real thin syringe she'll open her mouth when its coming at you, if it's the fat ones like for tylenol shes tight-lipped or it falls out the side of her mouth. Yet, if you take the same meds and use the thin syringe she's all about it. So at this point we lay her on her back and use the thin syringe and put it all the way back along side her cheek and sqeeze just a tiny bit in at a time. It's so far back and so little each time that she can't possible spit it out.
When she was sick the last time we even tried spoon feeding her antibiotics to her and that worked. It just took forever. SHe hated the taste. What flavor is the pharmacy flavoring his meds? LO HATES bubblebum but loves the mint or strawberry.
