buzzbee and other helmet mamas

we just got our helmet the other day and having problems with it being crooked all the time. we went back in and she adjusted it but she said it is normal for it to do this until he grows into it. I don't get it, isn't it supposed to be custom made to his head? also whenever I put him in a car seat it pushes his glasses down and they pinch his nose and he screams. she says taking it off for long car rides for now is fine. isn't this counter productive? we are in and out of the car a LOT with 4 dif drs to see, therapy and taking daddy to and from work. I'm so frustrated with this! any similar experiences?

Re: buzzbee and other helmet mamas

  • DS helmet was also loose and crooked for the first two weeks. it is custome made, but they have to allow some grow room in the beginning, the looseness goes away within that time. the not wearing on long car rides does seem counterproductive, however, once he gets that initial growth spurt in the first two weeks, I would think that long car rides would require the helmet and the slippage of the helmet shouldn't be an issue. it does take some adjustment time. Also, body temp Adjustment time if they didn't mention that. about a week for their body temps to regulate with all that trapped heat. dress lo a slight bit lighter while indoors helps. I'm glad you are on the path of correction now, I know it's been a frustrating road, this adjustment time shall pass, and both you and lo will barely notice the helmet. but yes, the helmets start out a bit loose, they would rather allow lo to grow into it rather than feel all the pressure from it starting out too tight. PM me if there's anything else I can help with!

    good luck!

  • everything buzzbee said! I remember when LO got his first helmet, it was constantly falling down over his left eye... DROVE ME NUTS!! but after a few adjustments and growth, the helmet started to fit much better. we are going on helmet number three in just a few weeks and I am sure to expect the same adjustment period as i did with the first two! let me know if there is anything I can help you with too... we have been on this helmet road since september and will continue until he is at least one... :)

  • Thanks for the words of encouragement! It's just that even if it was a little big or whatever, I figured I'd be able to wiggle it back straight or something, but it's always crooked no matter what I do. he doesn't mind the helmet when it's on but if you try to adjust or take it off/on he gets upset.  he has gone through so much I just wish everything wasn't so frustrating! the lady kept saying it's because of his glasses. but frankly the glasses are more important so what am I supposed to do if the helmet won't cooperate!  it's like she had never done it for a kid with glasses or something. so annoying.

  • The first helemt we got LO had had grown in the time it took to get the helment from the measurements being taken.  So we were inthe office for 2.5 hours with LI crying, before she asseded his had had grown.  they had to rush to get a new one and then he wore it for a week and we went back.  They eneded up putting pads in the front and the back.  Maybe thats what your LO needs as well.
