Preemies

Poly Vi Sol (or other multivitamins)

Who else was told to continue a multivitamin when discharged from the NICU? If your baby is EBF, are you doing so?

DS was born at 33wk, 6d with no health issues, other than the fact that he was premature. He is EBF and lately does not like to take a bottle (and doesn't like to take Poly Vi Sol by dropper...must taste yucky). So because he is EBF with no health issues, I'm wondering if I even really need to continue the multivitamin. My research tells me an EBF baby doesn't need supplements....except perhaps vitamin D (am reading conflicting info on that).

Of course I'll speak to the pedi, but wondering what other parents are preemies that are EBF are thinking/doing in regards to multivitamins.

Re: Poly Vi Sol (or other multivitamins)

  • We were also told to give poly vi sol after discharge...DS was EBF, but I added a little formula to his bottles, for extra calories (I pumped) for the first 12 weeks.  I think I stopped the vitamins when he exclusively went to formula.

  • We were told to give him poly vi sol w iron but he hated it and so did I. So I asked my dr about just giving d drops he's ebf and the pedi said yes so that's all we've ever given him since about one month old.

  • We did the poly-vi-sol with iron until we switched to a gummy vitamin at 18 months per our pediatrician.

My son loved the taste though, he would suck it right up out of the dropper.  It smelled awful though, so I think my son is just strange.

  • I also EBF and give Poly Vi Sol first thing in the morning. DD loves it and has never not wanted to take it. We were told at least a year as I plan to breastfeed for that long. She is growing and doing very well but pedi still wants her to have it.

  • We also used Poly Vi Sol w/ Iron, I pumped and put it into the bottle nipple bc when I would use the dropper directly to her mouth she would spit it out with this really funny confused look on her face. And its such an ugly color it stained everything! Our formula has iron in it so we have stopped using it and have started using probiotics. I'm sure once you express your concerns to the pedi you can fine something that works for you guys!! GL!
