dumb ? re: contractions

Short version: Is it possible to have partial contractions? ie: part of your uterus feels hard and tight, but definitely different than a full on BH contraction

Long version: I was in L&D about 10 days ago after having some pretty consistent BH contractions. When I was monitored for about 45 minutes, the monitor picked up two contractions, but I marked (they gave me a little button to push that made a notation on the monitor paper) that I felt five.

Today, I've been feeling a bit off - I think I was dehydrated. Almost passed out in church and then started getting a few BHs this afternoon. However, only one of them was a big, full uterus, my belly is hard type contraction. When the others happened, it still felt like a tightening, but it was a smaller area (like maybe a large grapefruit). They actually started that way and I figured it was BHs until I got that full belly one. I could feel baby moving around a decent amount between 'episodes'.

They've gone away now after a bunch of water and lying around. But I got to wondering - were these little tighenings contractions? Or is baby big enough that if s/he is stretching out that I'd feel a head/butt as a similar sensation?

It's not a big enough deal for me to call the Ask a Nurse line, and I'll ask my doctor at my appointment on Friday....just wondering if any of you know what I mean and/or know what I'm feeling?

  • sounds like BH to me. I had them non-stop one day/night and by the next day I was fine. I would just drink a TON of water

  • I have the same feeling today and I'm having twins. I feel a lot of flipping and stretching with hardness. I know my contractions with DS did not feel like this so I'm chalking it up to movement. I go Thurs for a growth scan so we'll see where these turkeys are.

  • Sometimes the baby moving into a funky position can mimic the sensation of a BH contraction.  My girls did that to me, especially toward and throughout the third trimester.  That's what I reckon it must be when you feel just one hard spot and the rest is normal - just your babe sitting strangely, or stretching.  It's probably a head or butt you're feeling.

Thanks - this is kind of what I was thinking, especially after having the one full BH contraction in the middle of all that nonsense. But I just wasn't sure if at 23 weeks baby was big enough to cause such a ruckus! I kind of hope it happens at my apointment on Friday (you know...in those 10 minutes Stick out tongue), so I can have my doc feel and tell me for sure.
