Pregnant after IF

Bedrest after IVF

Hello Ladies,

I don't know the rules and protocol of these boards, so forgive me if I'm not allowed to post here! :)  I am doing IVF #2 in January and wondering what worked for you guys?  Last time I stayed no more than 30 min at the RE's after the transfer (getting up to pee and change during that time) and then stayed in bed the entire day after the transfer and the following day as well and took it easy around the house the next day. This time I will be working and almost wonder if I was too still last time (I was on summer break). I hear so many differing opinions. I hear people laid completely still at the RE's for 30 min after and kept their hips elevated when home for 24 hours...

Would love to hear from those of you who did IVF and are now pregnant!

Thanks in advance!! :)

Re: Bedrest after IVF

  • I haven't intro'd here yet but will be soon since we just got our BFP!!  My RE has you stay laying down for an hour then I was on bedrest the rest of that day and for 2 more days after that.  Since it was our 2nd IVF, I took it *really easy* for the entire 2ww.

One other thing we did differently this time around was that I had an endometrial biopsy in the cycle before my IVF cycle in hopes that it would help with implantation.  Seems like it did!! :)

  • RE had me lay down for an hour after my transfer and then I was placed on 24 hour bedrest.  I did have to go to the bathroom so they let me get up early.

  • I laid down for 30 min in the clinic after my transfer.  I then was on bedrest for that day and the next day.  By the end of the second day I was officially a naughty bed rest patient and did a really bad job of laying around.

  • I basically did 3 days of couch rest (modified bed rest) and then worked from home until beta as I have that flexibility in my job... I did this for all my transfers and wound up with a c/p, then an early m/c, then a BFN, and finally this one.

I don't think it really matters all that much, but it's hard not to over analyze everything I know (I still do it!)

  • After the transfer I was able to get up and go pee and change my clothes right away.  We were really only there for about 15 min afterwards.  I went home and relaxed for the rest of the day, and then took it easy the following day-no bedrest though.  I was scared to even pee at first but my doctor described it like this: rice and skippy.  He said that all the meds I have been taking have made my uterus sticky and fluffy (like skippy peanut butter) and the embryo is like a grain of rice.  It's stuck in there pretty good.  Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone! My RE is very lax about the whole bedrest thing which is why I was curious what yours had to say. Trixie- seems like our RE's are pretty similar! Our RE's are the experts...not me or Dr. Google or Dr. thebump! :)

  • After all of my transfers (2 with one RE, 1 with another), I was kept in a slanted position with my hips up in the air (there is a fancy name for the guy who invented it) for 30 minutes. I then had to pee and was free to go. From there on, it varies. Most people tell you to "take it easy" the rest of the day and the following day you can resume "normal activity". I usually do nothing the day of the transfer and try to continue doing nothing the next day. I am not on strict bed rest but I spend a lot of time on the couch and letting DH get me things. I also suffered from OHSS this last time so that limited my mobility as well. I think its a personal decision and you have to do what you are comfortable with. If I could have, I would have wrapped myself and the house in bubble wrap and delicately walked around lol. GL to you!

  • I laid there after the transfers for maybe 15 minutes.  I took the following day off and went back to work after that.  I did try to sit as much as possible though

  • My RE also told me the peanut butter uterus thing (though he did not specify a brand...lol)

I lay still the 30 min after ET, then was on couch rest for the rest of the day, then just took it easy for a few days. GL!

  • I layed on the table for 15 minutes after ET then got up to pee and change. My DH drove me to accupuncture after and then I went home and spent the day on the couch. My office allows you to return to a desk job the day of ET if you're comfortable with it. I work as a nurse on a pretty busy unit so I staed home for three days after ET. I took it easy, but by no means bed rest. Along the lines of the peanut butter analogy, I was told it's like dropping a poppyseed onto the rough surface of a sponge; it'll find a spot to hide in! Good luck!

  • I have a job where I have to be in and out of the car about 4-5 times a day (I am an itinerant teacher so once in the school I am sitting.. So that means I'd be moving a lot between schools.  Like so many of you said though, "normal" people go on as usual after they conceive... It is looking like the transfer will be sometime during MLK weekend which is a blessing.  I will talk with DH and my RE to decided what is best. I just want this to be it!!!

  • I had to lay in almost froggy position on my back post ET for 30 minutes. (While thinking of anything EXCEPT how much I had to pee!) :) I actually had my post ER tummy problems the evening of my ET, so I spent the night on the bathroom floor trying not to move as much as possible while dealing with intestinal awfulness. Then I laid on the couch the next couple days just because I felt gross. So I did lounge around with minimal moving. I was on summer break too, so I had nowhere to be.

When I asked the doc, their official answer was to keep my feet up that whole ET day and take it easy for a day or two. When I jokingly asked if I should stand on my head he said "If you had to do that, nobody would ever get pregnant!" :) With all the data these places have on IVF, I think they'd be more strict with their rules if they had all the answers.

Best of luck - hope to see you over here for good soon!! :)

  • For DS I was told to lay on the table post ET for nearly an hour with hips elevated and then 3 days of strict bedrest only getting up to use the restroom.

For this round only 30 minutes with hips elevated on the table post ET and 3 days of bedrest. But that's my RE's protocol.
2nd ectopic resulted in loss of tube. HSG revealed remaining tube is "severely torqued".

  • Always happy to answer questions!!  My RE only made me lay still for 15 mins after my ET.  I did acupuncture along with my transfer, and I can't say if that is the reason it stuck, but both embies stuck my first time so obviously it didn't hurt.  When I got home, my instructions were to take it easy/ bedrest, but that I can get up, walk around, go to the bathroom, etc. once an hour for 2 days past ET (i.e. my ET was on a Tuesday and I didn't return to work until Friday).

GL with everything and hope to see you on this board next month!!
