Preemies

Continued frustration. Ugh.

I vented on here a few weeks ago about one of our girls' feeding challenges ... I swear, when it's not one thing, it's something else entirely.

We're REALLY frustrated with the complete discontinuity of nurses right now, between the holidays, over staffing bc there are so few NICU babies, nurses getting pulled to other floors, etc. We've had maybe one of our regularish nurses 2 or 3 times during the day over the past two weeks. There's no question there's a direct relationship bw nurse familiarity and how stable Claire is and or how much Paige takes by mouth. ::sigh::

Then the past 24 hours was a complete fail. The nurse yesterday tried to take her out of the head hood with zero oxygen support. Maybe it's just me, but if she's not in room air under the hood, she probably can't just magically come out and be on room air. I also shouldn't have to explain how the humidifying of the head hood works, and that when it's bone dry respiratory needs to look at it to refill. And, don't even get me started on the frat boy sounding night nurse who admitted he only gave Paige 3 or 4 minutes to get coordinated on her bottle feeds, and gave up on her when she didn't. If he looked at the notes, he would know this is normal and she is up to 80 or 90 percent by mouth, so she probably deserves a bit more of a chance. Okay, maybe the frat boy comment is unwarranted, but whatever.

I hate to be 'those' parents, but we're both at our wits end and will definitely be chatting with some peeps today. I'm tired of feeling like we're getting the B Team now that our girls are weeks away from being discharged...and for all the other circumstances leading to the nurse run around.

  • So sorry... I understand... we were only in for 3 weeks but in those 3 weeks we had about 40 nurses and they work 12 hr shifts.... it was insanely difficult to get answers... i finally had it one day (about 2 wks in) and broke down when the doctors did their rounds. one intern sought me out afterward and she insured i was kept up to speed the rest of the time... we also had a few similar run-ins with a couple nurses (i felt like i knew more about what should be done than they did)... talk to the nurse manager. they are there to help. we did and we had a bit moire continuity that last week...

hope your girls break out of there soon... i thought we were going to be in at least til christmas but ine day he "woke up" took everything from the bottle and never looked back... hope the same for your girls.
