Motts Applesauce for constipation? yay or nay

lol.....I've been getting mixed answers about this.  my dd is 16 months and gets constipated a couple of times a week.  She drinks water and has fruit but still happens.  We do stage 2 prunes and apples and sometimes it works and sometimes not.

Someone told me applesauce but then I looked it up and info said it is binding!!!!!!!!!  Any experience with this.....TIA

Re: Motts Applesauce for constipation? yay or nay

  • Yea I think I remember the pediatrician saying it can be binding. I used to give mine pureed peas to make her poop. Now she poops like 5x per day, so I haven't had to try any tricks for a while.

Anyway, peas and green beans are high in fiber so they can help get things moving.

  • Applesauce and apple juice have opposite effects.  Applesauce can cause constipation (so can bananas...learned that the hard way after giving DS a ton of eachIndifferent ).  Apple juice can help relieve constipation.

  • Applesauce is a big no-no for constipation.  We had a horrible time when DS was little and ended up putting him on daily Miralax for a while.  If you are nursing, push as much breastmilk as you can.  If not, stick with whole fruits (except bananas) and foods that start with P (prunes, pears, peas).

  • My ped told me that coincidentally most fruits and veggies that start with a "P" help with constipation. Pumpkin, pineapple, prunes, peaches, pears etc.

  • BRATT diet for diarrhea.... the A is applesauce :) so if it helps bind up adults I would say it would do the same for kids, however fresh apples are different!

dried apricots work well for constipation!!!

  • We had issues for a while when DD was still on formula.  Our GI recommended two ounces of prune juice mixed with two ounces of water.  It helped a lot.
  • My DS eats peas almost everyday and poops like a champ.  I never knew it might be the peas, though!

  • Thanks for the responses.......NO APPLESAUCE  LOL!!!  will try the p's.....I will get some fresh pears and will def. try the l/2 apple juice and l/2 water and of course prunes.   Thanks again
  • Applesauce does not work for constipation. P is for poop so try pears, pump kin, prunes or peas. Also watch the bananas and cheese. They will make it worse.
