My MIL and FIL heard about my SIL and my goal to be in bikinis by the summer (it may not be pretty but it's going to happen. My husband, who was inspired by my new status as a gym rat has started going to the gym. So for Christmas my IL's gave me, MH, SIL and her husband, each Nike Fuel bands, new running shoes and a chunk of money towards going to see a trainer. This is awesome. But we are now all competing with the Fuel Bands. I must win. So in addition to going to the gym I think I want to start running again. I haven't run in a decade so I feel like I need to take is slowly and I need a strategy.
Re: Couch to 5K learn me about it.
I never did Couch to 5k, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I use Hal Higdon for all my training programs, and he has a beginning running program which I would advocate.

Also, if you have an ipod or iphone I think this would be AWESOME for beginning running. I'm going to get the full (non 5-k version).

I never did the C25K but I used the Map my Run app because it followed my every move and I can not only see how many calories I burned, my stats, etc....I could see evaluation and the exact route I took. One day I ran all over in a church parking lot and at the end it showed all the squiggly red lines for my route. And it would compare days and I could add friends and track.
my other motivation every time I ran was signing up for a 5k. That really was the only thing that would get me moving because I knew I wasn't prepared so I would bust my arse out there getting prepared because I didn't want to be the last one finishing. The very first time I did that, I signed up for a 6k in August and it was June. I went from not running at all to trying to get runs in whenever possible. I ended up losing 30 something pounds....and got to the run, only to find out it was a walk. Haha! But I don't care....I lost a ton and was toned as hell.
I did the C25K program and LOVED it and I plan to start it up in the new year. I used a free app for my iPhone by Zen Labs. I really liked the app. It really helped me work up to running for the full 5K. I was starting with no running experience at all, and I found the way the app progressed you was at the perfect rate.
