Re: Stomach sleeper!?!?!

  • My LO has done this since 4 months or so.. as soon as she was able to roll, she did. I have NEVER been able to keep her on her back. The moment she hits the mattress she flips over, even if she's out cold when I lay her down. I used to be really nervous about it, but she's been okay this far, and I never find her with her head buried or anything. I just keep the crib free of blankets and things and keep her clothes well fitting and out of her face (no hooded sweatshirts etc..).

  • I think my baby is trying to become a stomach sleeper too! He's started sleeping on his side, but then he acts like it's uncomfortable and rolls on over to his tummy... the problem is, he acts as though he has to keep his head and chest raised and doesn't seem to be able to relax and put his head down and sleep that way!

Anyway, at 7 months, babies are beyond the peak SIDS risk since they can easily roll back over, lift their heads, etc. If your LO wants to be a stomach sleeper, as long as he's in a safe sleep environment (e.g. no thick loose blankets etc.), there's no reason he shouldn't!

  • DD started doing this recently too. Once they have good head control and can roll both ways, there's not much risk involved as long as you don't have fabric bumpers in the crib that could block airflow.

  • DD started doing this when she was a month old. The dr said not to worry about flipping her back over, and she could hokld her head up so she could reposition herself. For about 6-7 months she ONLY slept on her tummy (never a wink on her back), but this past month she's been rolling back and forth and able to sleep either on her tummy or back. HOORAY! More sleep for everybody! I wouldn't worry too much about tummy sleeping at 7 months.

  • DS started being a tummy sleeper at 6 months and even likes to sleep facedown on his hands sometimes. If he can move, he's fine, but I do understand about being nervous.

  • We started sleep training a week ago and our LO would cry and then flip over onto his stomach and fall asleep. Before sleep training he'd remain on his back. Now he's not fussing when he goes to sleep at night so he stays on his back, but if he wakes in the middle of the night he flips over.

Anyway LO is 7 months and past the major SIDS risk, so we're trying not to be too nervous about it.

  • I don't even think about SIDS anymore to be honest. I wouldn't give it a second thought. Once they can get onto their stomach on their own, you're in the clear.

Also, my DD has been a tummy sleeper since 4 weeks. I've learned to come to terms with it!
