s/o Talking

I know I shouldn't compare DS with others, but he doesn't really say many words.  He knows dada, mama and 'at' for cat.  He constantly babbles and knows more animal noises than I can count.  The other day he pointed to the banana on his plate at breakfast and said 'nana', but I haven't gotten him to repeat it.  He does a good job of letting me know what he wants, but perhaps I should be making him tell me what he wants?

Are there any other LO's not talking much yet?

Re: s/o Talking

  • Lily's pretty similar to your DS.  She has a handful of words and a few other signs, but does an amazing job of communicating.  For words that she's starting to say, we make her say it even when we know what she wants already.  I don't want to try to force too much else, though.  She's picking up words at her own rate and as long as she's communicating I'm not worried about how many words she says.  Yet.

  • DS barely says anything. Or I guess I should say he barely says anything anyone can understand. He babbles and screeches, but mama is the only thing that's ever consistently come out of his mouth that I can decipher. I'm not super worried right now because I figure he's just busy developing other skills and the talking will come eventually.

  • DD babbles a lot and especially lately but she's "communicating". I don't remember which bumpie it is but she's a speech therapist and said that as long as they're communicating, no need to worry until past age 2. Plus we're speaking to LO in Spanish as well so that can delay speech or so I've heard.

  • If I know she can say it I make her say it before I give her what she wants unless I know she's super hungry or tired because then she just gets frustrated. If she can't say the word for something Ill give her some descriptors when I hand it to her. Like her blanket Ill say the colors on it, soft, warm, cuddle, night night.
  • I can't even get him to say mama and dada!  He knows how to and he does randomly, but not often.

He makes the "ba" sound for "bite" and "ball".  He also makes a "ha" sound for "hot".  He has also just started making a consistent noise for "woof woof woof" but I can't really understand the noise!

  • Constant babbling, but the only word she says consistently and purposefully is "dada." We name/label things for her like crazy and I know she'll pick it up sooner than later. What is more important right now is their receptive language -- or the laanguage they understand. For example, Abby knows "Go get your ___" (Scout, book, ball, rings, etc.). Another good example is that they follow simple one-step directions, such as "Come here", "wave", etc. As long as you know they are understanding language at this point, the expressive (verbal) language will hopefully come later.

  • DD has zero words with meaning. She babbles nonstop but that's it.

    She is walking though.

Also, we are a bilingual household with a third language outside the home so I expect her to have very few words for a long time. Even so,I wouldn't be worried yet about lack of vocabulary.

ETA: she does point and try to show what she wants though. There is definite communication, just without words.

This! I'd totally run behind him watching his hot ass!! Anyways, about the question, C doesn't make much sense, either. However, he's got other stuff brewing, like he just learned to walk, and two days ago climbed the flight of stairs. Also, I know his comprehension is there when I ask him questions, he does respond. Just not verbally.

  • DD can say, mama, dada, and some other words that aren't really words yet, like she'll say, "che" for cheese and "shhh" for shoe.  and she's getting really close w/ "kitty" and "hot"  other than that she can babble up a storm.
