Scrub-a-dub-dub

Have you taught LO how to wash his/her hands? Does s/he like doing it?

  • I have not. I will when she can stand. It doesn't make a ton of sense to bother until then. Though at this rate, she may be crawling down the aisle at her wedding, so who knows.

  • I haven't even thought about teaching her how to wash her hands. Whenever she's touching something like dirt or leaves outside, I'll wipe her hands with purell. Otherwise I'll just wipe them with a baby wipe as necessary, and wash them in the tub at night.

Exactly this. I have only washed his hands in the sink anew times, and twice it involved my panic after he explored the litter box.

  • I have her wash her hands a lot!  She mostly just likes to play with the water.  She understands the process though.  They must do it with them at daycare too?

  • I've tried with the hand washing, but he seemed traumatized by it! For now we're just using hand sanitizer, which he loves.
  • I wash DD hands after her meals.  She loves it and puts her hands out so she knows.  They wash their hands at daycare too.  I have never used sanitizer on her hands.  I carry around wet wipes.

  • Please stop using hand sanitizer instead of regular (not anti-bacterial) soap/water handwashing. The anti-bacterial ones have been linked to increases of antibiotic resistant bacteria and if there isn't sufficient alcohol (60%+), they don't work as well to kill all the germs (some marketed as child-safe actually spread bacteria around and make it worse!). And finally, without water, you aren't rinsing off any dirt/debris so the kids hands are still dirty, just have almost no bacteria. Plus if LO puts hands into mouth while wet w/ sanitizer they are ingesting what amounts to a lot of alcohol for their little bodies.

Obviously there are situations where a sink/soap aren't available and it's ok for occasional use. But they were not intended for daily use to totally replace regular hand washing.
