WWYD ER question

So I have the stomach flu and had to go into the ER for IV fluids. They listened for the heartbeat with the Doppler and couldn't find it so they sent down an OB nurse who also had trouble. She said she eventually found it at 120 but didn't seem convinced. She had the Doppler about at my belly button height and I'm only 13 weeks. She shrugged her shoulders and said ok I guess 120. Well now I'm stressing thinking that was my HB not the baby's. I'm still here and tempted to ask the doctor for an ultrasound to check. Am I overreacting?

  • Sounds like they didn't know what they were doing! I would request an ultrasound to make me feel better.

  • I explained the situation to the ER nurse and she said yeah 120 is low but no you're fine! UHG. I can't wait to be home from vacation and see my actual doctor!

  • I've never had an OB nurse who had trouble finding the HB or wasn't sure didn't have the dr check to be safe. I had an anterior placenta with my previous pregnancy and the nurses could never find the HB I had to have a BPP every time. You have the right to say u want to be checked by a dr and not the nurse because she was unsure as well. Don't let them manipulate you just because they are medical professionals does not always mean they are all knowing. If your uncomfortable go with your gut feeling and don't let them tell you any different. You have the right ad a patient to feel at ease with yourself and the treatment you received and Iif you don't then don't accept it demand what you need to feel better.

Thanks! I'm just going to ask the doctor when she comes in! I hate feeling uncertain.

  • If you're not comfortable, speak up and press the issue. I wouldn't be comfortable with, "I guess it's 120." I would want to know they were confident in the care they were giving.

    Good luck!

  • It should be easy enough to figure out if the heartbeat was baby or you. If your heart rate is 120 that is pretty high.  While it is on the lower spectrum of normal for a fetus it is still not really off.  I would ask the doctor what your heart rate is - if its around 120, then you probably need more fluids and you probably heard your heartbeat.  If its much lower then it was baby you were hearing.  Hope that is helpful.
