Tell me how to say this nicely...

So I am on a volleyball team that plays on Wednesdays. I have an 8:30 game tonight and DH does not want me to play because I am pregnant. He said "I do not agree with you playing"

How can I explain that I will be alright and that the baby will be alright in a nice rational way?

I think he is afraid that I will over do it or fall on my stomach.

(It's okay to play right?)Embarrassed  Would you play even if your H was against it....

I know this may be stupid but I love to play...I really love it.

  • Hehe ask first tri.

Can I play Volleyball while prego?

Exercise is always good while pregnant and if your body is used to it you will be fine. You land on your knees not your stomach. It would be a very awkward mess up if you did different.

    This:

"I will be alright and that the baby will be alright."

  • I mean, the baby is still behind your pelvis.  Maybe you play rougher than I do, but you should point out that you normally break your pelvic bone and rupture the organs beneath it.

I think if you want to play then you should.  But if you have reservations, then sit out.  Nothing is going to happen to the baby so its just a matter of what makes you and your DH feel psychologically better.

  • Just say something along the lines of....I would never want to harm our baby so I talked to my doctor who said that as long as it is a physical activity that my body is already accustomed to, then all should be just fine. In fact, it is encouraged to stay active during pregnancy.

With that being said, I would ask your doc first. It seems fine to me that you would play unless you do a lot of falling or dropping the the floor to catch a ball. I don't think that seems like a great idea.

  • Maybe you could skip this time and wait until you see your OB.  If your OB gives you the all clear to play then I'm sure that would put your husband at ease about it.

"I'm 6 weeks pregnant.  Even if I fall on my stomach, the ball of cells won't feel a thing.  Deal."

One of my best friends played volleyball right up to 37 weeks.  Just be careful and know your limits.

Make sure he realizes you can't shake it loose.

Say, "Your penis has a better chance of harming the baby during sex, do you want me to stop giving it up as well?"

    Ha! Yes

  • my ob actually vetoed me playing on my volleyball league.  so there's that.  you should be fine for the rest of first tri, though.

  • Kerri Walsh Jennings was pregnant when she played beach volleyball for Olympic gold. If she can do it and her doctors said her baby was in no danger, you can play.

  • Granted it was beach volleyball, but Kerri Walsh Jennings won an Olympic gold medal while pregnant.  She only revealed it after the games.  My sister played fast pitch softball into her 2nd trimester.  Know you limits.  If it doesn't feel right, then stop.

    This is sage advice.
  • unless you are some sort of high risk, I see zero reason not to play. I mean really, does he want you to just sit home for the next 34 weeks and not move... You have a better chance of falling down the stairs at your house vs getting hurt in your once a week vball game.

We use to play wallyball (indoor volleyball) and one of our friends was probably about 8 months pregnant and got hit in the stomach pretty bad... The baby's nose is a little flat, but overall she's totally fine. Wink

Were you high risk or is your OB really old-school?

i'm high risk in that my ass is old, but that's about it.  OB is pretty up to date.  The convo went like this.

OB: "keep up your normal levels of activity and exercise"

    Me: "great, my volleyball league...."

    OB: "oh, hell no"

not verbatim, but it was not a "well, if you feel ok with ..."  Direct veto.  Diving was a key concern.

I was already 9 weeks by the time I got in for the visit, had found out at 3 weeks 4 days, and had been playing up to that point.  the league disbands over the summer, so i had already finished the season.  Just can't go back until March.
