Selling Used Car Seats

Can you sell used car seats? There is a local baby/kids consignment sale that comes to a church near me 3 or 4 times a year. I have never seen car seats before until this year. They were advertising them like crazy and even posted a pic on FB page. I thought was illegal and/or a huge no-no.

Re: Selling Used Car Seats

  • I sold K's old car seat to the local cosignment store. Not illegal.

  • Yes you can sell them. I personally wouldn't buy a used one but some people don't have the choice.

  • You can sell them as long as they aren't expired, but many people don't want to buy them.  Then again some people can't afford a new one and may not have a choice.
  • I'd only buy a used one from someone that I trusted.  Like Fredalina said, it could have been in an accident.
  • Like PP's have said, it's not illegal. As long as its not expired its ok. Personally, I wouldn't buy a used one, but some people have no choice. I actually just sold DD's infant carseat/stroller yesterday to someone who couldn't afford a new one. But I know it's not expired and its never been in an accident. It was also stored in a proper place so it wasn't exposed to heat or cold.

  • It is legal to sell a carseat, but not recommended to buy a used one. My aunt works at a thrift store in CT and they are not allowed to accept or sell/donate carseats because of liability. Not sure if it's their policy or law. Like all other carseat laws, it varies by state.

I plan to get a new infant bucket for my new baby and will sell or donate it after he's done with it (unless I have someone who's pregnant and wants it). I don't feel bad  selling a seat as long as I know it's been properly cared for (no accidents, no harsh cleaners on the harness, never checked on a plane) but would never trust someone to be truthful with me.

I believe that in Canada, you are NOT allowed to re-sell a car seat that was manufactured before January 1, 2012 because it may not conform to the changes made just this year.

This is correct.  You are legally not allowed to sell carseats that were manufactured before 2012 even if they did conform to the changes that were made.  But that is Canada and I didn't look but I'm assuming the OP doesn't live here.

  • You can sell them, but I wouldn't get a used one unless I was very good friends with that person or family.  For instance, I sold our infant seat and base to my BFF.
