Going off Progestrone

So, to regulate my periods my ob/gyn put me on prometrium to raise my progesterone levels way before my husband and i were TTC.  Well.. now I am 4 weeks and 6 days pregnant and I am waiting to see if I am suppose to stay on my progesterone or go off. They sometimes keep women who have miscarried before on it but Most the time with your first pregnancy, like myself, they take you off of it.I am a little scared that if i go off progesterone there is a chance ill miscarry. Anyone had this situation pop up before?

BTW I am ecstatic to have a little one on the way! This is our first baby!

Re: Going off Progestrone

  • Not prior experience with it, but I've been put on it until 12 weeks since my levels were low (10 at 4.5 weeks). I wonder why have you stop it at all? If you needed it to normalize your cycle isn't that an indication that you weren't producing enough to start with? And if that's the case I would think they would at least need to check now and monitor your levels after to make sure they don't drop after stopping. Of course I'm no doctor, just my thoughts. I would definitely make sure, though, that you're on a bio-identical progesterone and not a synthetic progestin.

  • I was on it for DS and DD until 12wks. I would keep taking it. Won't hurt.
  • I would only consider coming off it if they were going to closely monitor your levels to make sure your progesterone doesn't drop. I'm currently on Crinone x2 a day and will be until 13 weeks.

  • Are they checking your levels?  I was on injectable progesterone and suppositories for an IVF cycle, and my RE took me off the injections at my first beta (4w) because my progesterone level was over 100.  Then at second beta (4w4d), she told me to go off the suppositories because my level was still in the 90s so it looks like body is taking care of it.  I was nervous to stop -- most IF women stay on it much longer than this -- but so far everything seems to be OK.

  • I'll be 8 weeks Saturday, and am going off progesterone then.  I am a little worried that it's too early, but the Dr. said it would be fine.  I'd stay on it as long as the Dr. wants you too.  Its gross, but it adds a little peace of mind.

  • I have been on it until 10 wks gestation with this pregnancy and with my previous one.  It can help support the baby before the placenta is fully developed and can support the baby.

Can you request to have your P4 tested to see where you are and maybe just continue on for the next few weeks?

I had very low P4 when tested with my last pregnancy so while having to stick a suppository up there twice daily isn't the funnest, it is worth it in the grand scheme of things.

  • I just received a phone call from my OB dr. and she said to not go back on it. I am a little nervous. I mean I should proabably listen to her right?

  • I'm on 2 different types right now and will be on at leats one until 12 weeks.

When did you stop it?  Did you get a level check before stopping?

  • The progesterone i was on was in pill form and i took it Day1-14 then my period would start by the 16 or 18. So.. last night of it was Nov. 14.  And no testing happened prior.

The doc just doesn't want me to go back on it. Even if she tested me it would probably be normal or high since i just went off of it Nov. 14.

I'm disappointed they wouldn't check your levels now, and then again in a week or two to make sure they don't begin to drop. Your correct that oral would affect your blood test, but by checking over time you would know if your body is continuing to produce. Some docs don't believe in progesterone supplements to support, maybe that's part of it. Either way, if you start to see any spotting, and certainly any bleeding, get in right away and get your levels drawn.
