HSAs and Pre-natal classes

I am pretty sure that my insurance company doesn't cover pre-natal classes. I've done some research on irs.gov and I cannot determine if pre-natal (labor, delivery, breastfeeding & newborn care educational) classes are an HSA qualified medical expense. Has anyone else been able to determine if funds in an HSA can be used to pay for pre-natal classes? TIA

Re: HSAs and Pre-natal classes

  • DH and I were just looking at this last night, from my understanding the funds can be used for a lacatation course and infant CPR. I've been meaning to call them to double check so if you find out before I do let me know.

Sorry to be ignorant but what is HSA?

  • Health Savings Account.

The IRS, not your insurance company, governs what a qualified medical expense is that you can use your HSA to pay for. Technically, prenatal/birthing classes are elective and are not "medically necessary" so I wouldn't expect them to be covered.

But vasectomies are covered according to the IRS, so go figure.

  • I do not know the answer to this question, but I have an HSA, so I am keenly interested. Is there an IRS publication that defines which expenses are covered?
