Cloth Diapering

Help me troubleshoot

I've been having some minor ammonia issues with my overnight hemp prefolds. I switched to Tide and it didn't solve the issue.  I just boiled them on the stove for 30 minutes to strip them.  If detergent build-up was the issue, the water would have turned soapy, right?  Can I cross detergent build-up off the list?

Re: Help me troubleshoot

  • SOme people rinse their ON diapers before they go into the pail if they are really smelly. I have found that adding 1/4 cup of bleach to the wash once a month keeps my diapers from smelling. If you try this, just be sure you either add it to the bleach dispenser or wait until your washer fills entirely of water before you add the bleach so it dilutes immediately and doesn't pool onto any of the diapers. I bleach everything- diapers, covers, pail liners, wet bags, wipes, etc.
