C-sections

doula and c-sec?

So I had a doula planned for my vag delivery but now that I am scheduled for a c-sec (breech) I dont really need her anymore and the worst part is I work with her.

She was asking me today about the plan and she hinted she wanted to be there.  I have my mom and DH so I honestly dont need her assistance anymore but I dont know how to tell her....

this is so awkward.

Thoughts?

Re: doula and c-sec?

  • I'd be honest with her.  Your plans changed and you had no control over them.  It's nothing personal.

This is something she encounters as a doula.  I can't imagine you are the first client she's had who ended up with a scheduled c/s (unless she's brand new to the game).

Did you have a contract with her?  Does it say anything about no longer needing her services due to circumstances out of your control?

You can let her know you'd love her to visit you a few hours after the birth/the next day/whatever.

  • C/S usually only allow for one person to be present in the room and recovery for multiple hours. So unless you plan on having her over your DH I would tell her ASAP.

  • You hired her. You have a professional relationship. All you have to do is say that she is no longer needed.

That said, depending on your reason for a c/s, she may still be able to help you. You can ask her if there are other services relating to your birth other than simply attending that might be of value to you.

I know my doula helped with lots of information, helping with LOs positioning, tons of resources after my unplanned c/s, bfing advice, etc.

  • We hired a doula, but found out at 38 weeks we needed a csection. My doula knew I was being monitored for size starting at 36 weeks, so she wasn't surprised when I told her that they measured E at almost 13 lbs and recommended a csection. She offered to still be there for us in recovery, but we declined. I knew they limited the people in recovery, and I had H and knew my mom would be there. My doula was actually a doula in training, so I think it was the first time that happened to her, but she was very understanding. I would just be honest with your doula. I'm sure it has happened before, and it won't be the last.
