day 3 of napping in the crib

Ok, be careful what you wish for, I guess...

Today is the 3rd day in a row LO naps in the crib (30-45 min). She starts on me and then I transfer her.

But, it's been a week since she has been waking every 1-2h at night. we go like this from 10 pm until 10 am. Ugh! During the day she is nursing every hour and at night she seems really hungry, not just comfort sucking. I am really considering solids, even though I wanted to wait for 6 mo - she's EBF.

On top of it, LO's been super cranky/ whiny. She was never like that Sad

  • I KNOW everyome say solids are just for fun right now but I think they saved my sanity. Two days after we started on veggies he started to sleep better at night. He was eating every two hours all day and all night, sometimes more at night. We started solids and he will vigorously down about 2.5 ounces of pureed veggies mixed with oatmeal before bed and STILL breastfeeds his normal amount afterwards. He also gets an ounce at breakfast and lunch and still breastfeeds every two hours in the day. But now is only waking to eat at night twice, which is better than 6 or more we felt with for two months. My guy is also 17 pounds and 27 inches. I knew he was hungry beyond breastmilk but didn't want to do formula.

  • I wanted to wait until six months or even longer to start solids. I sideeyed my pediatrician and mom when they both told me she might be wanting more which may explain her frequency of eating. However, when the lactation consultant recommended it also, I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm not sure if it's helping but she has been sleeping and napping really well for me lately...knock on wood. She was on a kick where she was up until 11 or 12 and then up every hour. I hope I don't jinx it by posting this!!!!

  • My LO had been doing the same thing as yours starting at 4 months, though not feeding quite as often. It was a month of literal hell. But we're pulling through. It's possible that your LO is going through a growth spurt, in which I (politely, I hope) would suggest against solids just yet. The frequent feedings trigger your body not only to make more milk but make it even more filling and nutritious to meet your growing LO's needs. I know a lot of EBF moms find them tough and worry that the kids are starving but it's what nature has intended for them in order to grow. Solids at the pre-6 months age aren't 'just for fun' as a PP suggested. They are 'for mom & dad's sanity', which is very different. The risk of allergies, digestion problems, and a host of other problems go up with early solids. LO's bodies aren't ready for solids - it's not like there blenders for the past thousands of years. That being said, most of our generation where fed solids early and lots of people grew up okay (although I guess that's also a stupid argument since lots of people in our generation grew up with major health problems too!). Who knows? I don't think my LO was extra hungry while she was waking because she would go right back to sleep with the paci (but wake every 30 minutes when it fell out). It was so horrible I was almost willing to try anything. But the friends I do have who's kids started solids early did say their kids slept better.
  • I forgot to say, congrats on the crib success! That's a big achievement.

Also, I ended up pushing LO's bed time earlier (from 7:45 to 6pm) and she started sleeping better, too. But at this point, I consider everything I try a crapshoot.

Her frequency increased at 3 1/2 mo, but I figured it was a growth spurt, but last week the night wakings got very frequent. I don't know if it could last a month?

She's cranky, I am cranky... I know 6 mo is the ideal, but babies do not follow calendars exactly. She will be 5 mo on Sunday and the pedi gave the green light at 4 mo. We will try 1 tbs of oatmeal tomorrow in addition to a feeding, so, we'll see if she takes it.
