Natural Birth

Today is my EDD

I calculated my EDD according to my last menstrual cycle, the Dr. office did it off of the first u/s.  They gave me an 11/11 date.  Which is totally fine with me, that is just a week later before they start pressuring me for an induction.  Anyway.. I guess with these dates approaching, I need to start preparing myself for this part of pregnancy.  My understanding is that the danger to baby in going over is amniotic fluid, aging placenta, and I keep reading about meconium(which makes sense, but then again, it doesn't).

What are your expereinces with going over your due date?  I have always felt that 2 weeks over was a good gauge of safety, but now that I am approaching their due date-  I don't know.  I really do NOT want an induction as I feel like it will dominoe affect on me.

Re: Today is my EDD

  • My water broke exactly at 41 weeks and after 48 hours DD was born :) At 40 weeks for me, there were NO signs that she would be coming soon. I was so anxious!!

  • I am very anxious! :)  Makes me wish I had been able to do a homebirth this time too.  My water broke on my due date last time and I started having contractions 2 hours later and was holding him by 11 hrs later.  I am hoping for a quick labor this time... but only time will tell!
  • I went into labor last time right at 41 weeks (the average for FTMs is 41+1).  I walked around at 2cm dilated, 80% effaced for 3 weeks leading up to that, which obviously isn't a good indicator of when labor will start.  There was evidence of meconium when my water broke (this does become more likely the later you go, but doesn't necessarily mean there is an problem or that it will be a problem, they just take extra precautions), but there were no issues from it.

Keep in mind that the early dating U/S is more accurate than basing EDD on your LMP.  Also, generally speaking the "risks" you're talking about are very low until you pass 42 weeks, not 40.  That's when you're considering "overdue" or post-dates.  And of course, a lot can happen in the next couple of weeks.  It'll happen, just hang in there!

  • I gave birth at 41 1/2 weeks. My doctors were really pressuring me to get an induction, but I kept stalling them.  I did agree to get NSTs every other day, and since everything was okay, DH and I decided to let LO come on her own.  We did ALL the 'natural' induction stuff like walking, squats, etc. I even bought a little bottle of castor oil, but decided against taking that risk.  In the end we had a healthy little 7lb 3 oz girl. We did have meconium, but it wasn't a big deal...the dr. just suctioned it out of her mouth before she breathed it in.  That said, I don't think I would have gone past 42 weeks.
